Discussion on Zurich

eagertolearn :

I'm planning to go to Switzerland next week and have drawn up a itinerary myself. It's hard to gauge how long I should stay at each point and how much time I should leave for connections. Is anyone familiar with the route and could give some advice? My plan is: (Wed at 13.10) arrives at Zurich, stay in Zurich overnight. (Thurs) leaves Zurich for Chur, catches Glacier Express at Chur (11.15 only one train per day) for Zermatt. Arrives Zermatt at 16:42. (Fri) Zermatt -> Interlaken, stay at Interlaken. (Sat) Interlaken -> Luzern, stay at Luzern (Sun) Luzern -> Zurich, catches flight at 20:25 back. My question is whether this looks like a hurried plan and not leaving enough time for connection/stop etc. Any sensible suggesions would be greatly appreciated!

Goddess of Grammar :
"You don't have to worry about the connections--they're always perfect. (The website won't even mention any connection that's too tight.) Staying in Zurich overnight the first night is okay, especially if you've had a long flight. (Normally I don't recommend Zurich for a 5-day trip. Another option would be to stay in Chur, or somewhere between the two, so you don't have as long a train ride the next day. Zurich is pretty at night though, and the train ride is obviously prettier by day.) Thursday is perfect, assuming you like trains! If you like trains, you'll love the Glacier Express. Leave Zurich HB at 9:37. I would give Interlaken a miss, and either stay another night at Zermatt (if you can afford it!) or stop between Zermatt and Interlaken, maybe Brig or Spiez. You'll still have plenty of time to get from there to Luzern on Saturday. Or you can head straight to Luzern and on the Saturday do Pilatus or Titlus. Sunday's fine. Spend ALL your time in Luzern (or Pilatus/Titlus/boat ride on the lake) and catch the direct train (18:10-19:13 if you're allowed to be that late) back to the airport. Or the one to HB and transfer if you must. Have a great trip!"

In 1887 through 1930 did a person living in the Canton of Zurich register for Cival registration in the Zurich Cantonal office,or their District office or ther Muncipality Office?Where are those reocrds now?

madonna_toller :
"They should still be archivated in the offices."
swissnick :
"Do you think/know, that the person gained the Swiss citizenship in those years? What more do you know about that person? It would be much easier to know the village the person lived those days. As the village municipality definitely has all information, it should be possible to get the data requested. The districts probably don't have much material, rather then the Canton itself (see second link). Their relevant department is reached directly with the third link (Staatsarchiv; use "Kontakt" - e-mails in English will be answered as well). And of course the official website "Swissroots" will give you assistance as well. Good luck!"

I will be going to Zurich in late June. I will arrive in Zurich airport but I will go to Geneva for two days first, then go back to Zurich for 4 days. Does anyone know if I can just go to the rail station and pick up train ticket to go to Geneva on a Sunday morning? How much is the train ticket? And is there anyway I can book the tickets online? Thanks in advance!

cbikego :
"When you arrive at zurich, there is a train station connected to the airport. you will be able to buy your tickets on the day. the ticket sellers all speak english, and are very helpful if you are polite. i would recommend buying the ticket on the day, just in case your travel is delayed. swiss trains are very efficient, dont even be 1 min late or you will miss it. cost will be about CHF120. for more info you can check out"
kunjaldp :
"every 30 minutes."
bobo :
"i fully agree with cbikego, the travelling time to geneva will be about 3 hrs, return tickets 1st class: sfr. 268.00, 2nd class 162.00, make sure that once out of zurich main station you sit on the left side in travelling direction, like that you get to see the glorious lake panorama once you get to the romandie"
AlpineAlli :
"You can also buy a ticket on the train, with cash or credit card. (I think it costs a bit more--5 franks?) If you time it right, there are a VERY limited number (like 8) of really cheap tickets available online here: Good luck though! (Edit) As someone said, there's a train every thirty minutes from something like 5 am to 10 pm. It takes 3:02 or 3:04 from the Zurich airport to the Geneva main station. If you don't manage the cheap option above, I strongly recommend that you take the train at 13 minutes past the hour, rather than 43 minutes past. Those trains go through Bern and Fribourg and are MUCH more scenic than the ones through Biel. Well worth waiting the half-hour (and possibly the extra few franks, not sure how much)."

Zurich has no Eiffel Tower. Or Coliseum. Or Statue of Liberty. Yet people love Zurich. So much so that for six years running, it has been named the city with the best quality of life in the world by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Zurich city of Switzerland is the largest city in the country. Yet Zurich promotes itself as the ‘Little Big City’. It promotes itself rightly as its historic centre is not very big and wide.
