My husband and I are 'seniors' and planning a trip to Yosemite in June. Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay on the south side that is reasonably ie 100 - 140 dollars a night?

mom :
"Yahoo search Yosemite, you should be able to find some info. :o)"
chicnlips2012 :
"go to National Parks. gov perhaps tp find listing there , I was there long ago and we camped out"
OC1999 :
"If you are talking about South of Yosemite Valley you could try Wawona this is at the southern end and still in Yosemite NP(Although about an hour from the Valley). Outside of Yosemite to the South is also Fish Camp and Oakhurst. They have several national chains as well as local hotels. These places will be about 90 minutes out of the Valley."
park_lover :
"If you want to stay in Yosemite National Park, the Wawona hotel is located between Yosemite Valley and the south entrance station. Check for room availability at the web link below. If you want to stay outside of the park, I suggest you try the Best Western Yosemite Gateway Inn on Hwy 41 in Oakhurst. I spent a night there last September and was pleasantly surprised - would definitely stay again. It's clean, comfortable, conveniently located near the middle of town and reasonably priced. To check for room availability, go to the web link below and search for Oakhurst, CA to find the Yosemite Gateway Inn. I'll be going to Yosemite again early next June. This time I plan to stay at Cedar Lodge in El Portal on Hwy 140 near the Arch Rock (west) entrance. El Portal is the closest you can get to Yosemite Valley without actually being in the park - 15 minute drive. If you would like to explore this option, go to the Yosemite Motels web link below. Yosemite View Lodge is located at the park boundary and Cedar Lodge is located about 5 miles further west. I've stayed at both of these motels before and found them to be acceptable and reasonably priced. On the down side, your eating options are rather limited. I'll often drive into the valley to dine at Curry Village or Yosemite Lodge."

I'm moving to Fremont, CA in June...and we're looking at things to do nearby--in Yosemite...what is there to do? We're not big on climbing mtns...a little hiking is okay...

Steve in NC :
"Here are a few things to do at Yosemite: | Art & Culture | Bicycling | Birding | | Boating - Rafting - Sailing | Casinos | | Entertainment | Events | Fishing & Hunting | | Golf Courses | Hiking - Packing - Climbing | | Horseback Riding | Outdoor Adventures | Shopping | Snow Skiing | Tours | Website:"
"In the "What to Do", section of the included link of "Yosemite Online" are things besides hiking like: visitor centers and museums, interpretive activities, biking, river activities, and tours. I hope you find some fun things to do. :)"

"Hmm the primary attraction in Yose is nature and the best way to enjoy it is to hike and climb and really get ou there. Having said that however there are several things to do in Yosemite that can be enjoyed without much physical exurtion. From this time of year thourgh probably late July with the amount of snowpack that is up there this year, the waterfalls in the Valley will be gushing! Go in May for the best restults. Yosemeitee falls is the 6th highest waterfall in the world and is very accessable. In May/June the flow is so high that when you are near the falls you hear enoronous crashing sounds which resembles thunder, but that sound is bolders the size of cars being washed over the falls and crashing at the bottom! You could also do the Mist trail to Nevada falls. As the name entails the last portion of the trial is often shrouded in mist because of the water fall and it creates a truley other worldly environment. You could also drive to glacier point (or hike from the valley floor 4miles) to get an encompassing view of the entire valley. When hwy 120 to tolomue medows opens you go up to the High Sierra to visit the high alpine meadows, lakes, and to view the many exposed granite domes. There is fisihing in some of the lakes and there is always a ton of wild flowers blooming up there. (If you want to see a really cool critter called a marmot, just pee, yes pee, on one of the exposed granite rocks not to near a parking lot or anything and the little critters will show up for the sodium in your pee in about 20 mins or so) Yosemite is almost like two parks, the high alpine meadows with a truly alpine ecosystem, and the valley with its medditerrian climate and huge exposed cliffs and waterfalls. Also within the park there are two groves of Seqoia trees, the largest trees in the world. The mariposa grove near the Hwy 41 entrance is the bigger and better grove, I once saw a Lynxs wild cat there just trotting along beside the trail. Also near the Hwy 41 entrance is Wawona a 1890s style historic village, gorgous old hotel, and golf course. In the evening deer often come out to feed on the greens. Depending on the time of year you can raft or float the merced river, the river that flows through the valley. Certian times of the year it is class 6 whitewater and you can't do it. But in late summer/fall it is doable, but then the waterfalls will be down as well. Yosemite is a great park in regards to the wonderfull views to be had just from the car or from very short (less than a mile) hikes from parking areas. My favorite part of the park is tolomue meadows, but I am avid rock climber and the wolrd class climbing on the exposed domes is unbeatable is summer. Hope this helps."

Fire early today destroyed the only grocery store in El Portal, just outside of Yosemite National Park, a Mariposa County Fire Department spokesman said. The El Portal Store at Highway 140 near Foresta Road was engulfed in flames when crews from the county and Yosemite arrived.
