At approximately 44 hectares (108.7 acres), and with a population of around 900, it is the smallest state in the world by both population and area. The state came into existence by virtue of the Lateran Treaty in 1929, which spoke of it as a new creation (Preamble and Article III), not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756 to 1870) that had previousl

Discussion on Vatican City

brock915 :

Is Vatican City a country, state, or city.

mrscmmckim :
"State. It is an enclave of Rome, Italy urban; landlocked; enclave in Rome, Italy; world's smallest state; outside the Vatican City, 13 buildings in Rome and Castel Gandolfo (the pope's summer residence) enjoy extraterritorial rights"
rollcage333 :
"The US views the Vatican City as its own country, making it the smallest country in the world. Some other countries view the Vatican simply as a part of Rome, Italy."
cameron_mulder :
"It is useally seen as a city state. So it is essentially its own nation."
firedupandhungry :
"All 3"
0_o Brezz :

i am learning Latin and i have been for three years now. i want to go to Vatican City but is it going to be waste or fun? HELP!

trykindness :
"Traveling to any country is never a waste of time, my dear. Your experience will enrich your life and personal experience. Vatican City is very beautiful and you will never regret the time, money you spend on the trip. Italians are also very nice people, you will and you will thank yourself one day for giving yourself a chance to see other parts of the world. Go travel."
Santa C :
"I hate to rain on your parade. Though Latin is used in masses, Italian is the working language of Vatican City. Do you like visiting city-states or small countries? If so, Vatican City is for you!"
j p :

did you know that the word vatican comes from 2 separate latin words? vatis- diviner and can- serpent. so vatican means divining serpent? creepy!!

Rosalind S :
"Really? Is that true? Where did you get that? Would you post a link? It is very scary, but is it really true?"
jimmy :
"The Vatican Hill takes it name from the Latin word Vaticanus, a vaticiniis ferendis, in allusion to the oracles, or Vaticinia, which were anciently delivered here"
Bl3ss3dw1thL1f3 :
"Well they are catholic over there.... My sister was in rome in 05 when the pope died, she was int he last group to be blessed by his gurgling self. She left anti catholic tracks all over the vatican..."
shell answer man :
"It means hill according to the dictionary I see online."
Latino Lifestyl :
"Where does the word "Vatican" come from and what does it mean?"
Weird Darryl :
"Wrong! Read the following from the Online Etymology Dictionary, - "1555, from L. mons Vaticanus, Roman hill on which Papal palace stands. An Etruscan loan-word, not related to vates 'sooth-sayer.' ""
johnny cee :
"The Vatican is a really neat place to visit. Really. I Cr 13;8a"
Angel Eyes :
"How wrong you are The word derives from the Latin vates, which means "tellers of the future." This name was the name given to a hillside on the west bank of the Tiber River in Rome because daily lineups of fortunetellers used to hawk their "wares" there to passersby on the street. In the fourteenth century, when the papacy was returned to Rome from Avignon (France), the present-day Vatican became the residence of the popes, and the word came to refer to the enclave in the middle of Rome that had become the seat of the Roman Catholic Church."
aldo triente :
"a link would be great. not everyone agrees it is latin - see link below, which says it is etruscan and specifically NOT related to vatis diviner or soothsayer. Why would this be shocking anyways? the name existed a thousand years before Christianity came to Rome. Christians came to the Vatican hill because it was a place for slaves and poor people."
Deirdre H :
"Sorry, but no. Vatican city is named after the hill on which it sits, called Mons Vaticanus. The word Vaticanus is of uncertain etymology, and is likely Etruscan in origin. No reliable etymoloyg relates the divinatory implication. Separating the word Vatican into two words is poor etymology unless the root of the words is somehow certain. In this case, it's not. The hill was named long before the Roman church was placed there, and an etymological study of the word would necessarily have to take into account WHEN that name was applied to that area."
slave of 12 Gods :
"what ever it means - it has to stop ! it is a bunch of old guys sitting around assuming the positions of god like dorks making up rules for human kind! if I need advice from a guy ,I'm gonna ask my dad who truly means well for my person! he doesn't tell me how to live my life or takes control of my reproductive organs! he doesn't tell me when to or not to have sex! he doesn't wear gold rings and fat gold chains and fur coats to impress me ! he is way taller then the pope and therefor of much more gallant stature! he never was a Nazi , and is the kindest most knowable teacher I ever had! so let the snakes out we know they are there!"
jared g :
"Somehow, whenever i see the word Vatican, the following website comes to mind: very strange :)))"
DougLawrence :
"Did you know that what you just wrote is absolutely incorrect and a total mistranslation? Properly translated, it means "city of prophecy". Please try again. "
amsops :
"Well, it is also the serpent mentioned in Rev.Ch.12. Be aware."

Is it true? Has the lost and hidden city of Paititi been found? This city was said to have been the secret hiding place of all of the Inca Kingdom's wealth and treasure - to keep away from the Spanish conquerors -- it is also said that for the past 400 years, only the Vatican knew the exact location of this city . . .
