Discussion on Tulum

Michael B :

I am taking my girl to Mexico in February, and we have decided to spend the first 4 nights in Playa Del Carmen to enjoy some nice beaches, restaurants, and night life. After that however, we would like to move to a very laid back, great "sit on the beach and do nothing but sunbath and swim" type of place. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either Tulum or Akumal. Which place would you recommend for the nicer beach and water? Small waves for beginning surfers and maybe some kite surfing lessons is a plus! Thanks!

banana_splitttt :
"Personally, i think the beach at Tulum is nicer then at Akumal. At Tulum you will have white sand and therer are also opportunities to surf if you want. I've seen some Scuba diving people there and i think that they can give you some kite lessons too! Enjoy!"
Mad Mex :
"Tulum has definitely better beach. If you do not have transport it is a bit tricky to go from hotel to town and thus limits your options for eating and drinking. Tulum is better if you prefer beach and a more relaxing atmosphere. Check with these guys for activities and or acommodation: Akumal has a killer lagoon for snorkeling. Akumal also offers a wider selection of places to eat and drink within walking distance. Akumal is your place if you want to do lots of snorkeling and / or prefer to do some socializing. Neither place has good waves for surfing. In fact there are no good places in the Riviera Maya for surfing. For kite surfing lessons and still have some good beach you can consider: Puerto Morelos. It is just south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen. It is small enough to just chill and has tons of good beaches."

"I would say hands down Tulum. it has very nice beaches and very friendly people. Plus it has the ruins which i would highly recommend checking out. I actually spent about 3 months in playa and it is one of the funnest cities in mexico. i would recommend checking out mamitas beach, the market places at night, and for alot of fun go south about 10 minutes from playa and go to the xcaret ecological park. You can swim with dolphins, many different snorking trips, underground caves that you can snorkel in and a beautiful beach alot with many other things. have a wonderful trip. p.s. if you go to the markets at night bargaining will come in handy."
Lola :
"both r sooooo beautiful places gut i prefer Akumal....its like paradide im 100% sure ull love it, its the most beautiful beach ive ever been, sea is so calmed that seems 2 b a lake , its not deep ( u can walk about 20 m inside and water will b in ur knees, besides water is warm like in a jacuzzy, water is clear, u can find seashells and fishes arround u in the sea. enjoy it!"
Michael B :

Hi, I am thinking about a week trip with my girl in late february to Tulum or Playa Del Carmen. I am looking for a good mix of beautiful beaches and decent nightlife. am hoping to get a basic beach bungalow for like 60 or 70 a night. Is this unrealistic for either blace? And I understand the places can get really crowded. Is there a specific location in either where the beach would be less crowded? North or South? And are there alot of people there in late February? Any other opinions or recommendations are welcome! Thanks!

haysu_christo :
"You've got dueling requirements -- active nightlife yet remote/isolated? I recommend PDC for nightlife but if you want more isolation (but no nightlife) then I recommend Akumal which is 30-minutes south of PDC. Ask your question on tripadvisor.com forums and you'll get better results."
Lola :
"y not both??? in playa u will finf decent night life not as in tulum, but tulum has more beautiful beaches and less crowded. anyways this 2 places r around 30 mins away one of the other and its really easy 2 go from one 2 the othes y juss have 2 take a van (public transportation) that will cost less than 2 usd. i recomend u 2 stay in playa and move 2 tulum whenever u want."
Tammy R :
"Playa del Carmen has everything you will want or need. 5th Avenue is wonderful for shopping and nightlife. Mambo Cafe is a wonderful club in Playa and there are many others. You are close to the ferry and can go over and spend the day in Cozumel. There is a place over there called Sanchos.....on a wonderful, secluded beach....has a pool...a restaurant....beach chairs....and they deliver your drinks to you. Wonderful place to hang out for the day. Stick with Playa.....it is the best."
CommanderQ :

I will be staying Cancun and plan to visit Chichen Izta but is it worth it to also visit Tulum

Bruno :
"Chichen Itza is far bigger/better and you might be disapointed if you go to Tulum afterward. The architecture is far more impressive blending Toltec and Mayan influences. Chichen Itza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So it is one of only 830 sites in the world with this honor including the Statue of Liberty and Great Wall of China. It may be "touristy" but its really impressive."
moonwalker :
"hi Bruno gave you a good answer chichen itza is a much larger area and offers more ruins to see althorp tulum has a really nice beach camping area and hut's on the beach you can look up on the cliff and see the ruins it is a one of a kind built to with stand hurricanes i stayed months at tulum fun fun and more fun"
blkgator :
"You can bet on it! Actually, some tour operators will offer you all day trips visiting Tulum and Xel Ha. Both are great places. If you like archaeological sites and Cristal clear white sand beaches, go for it!"
sweetiegirl_mx_99 :
"I would say its a must....it's the only archeological site facing the ocean. The view its amazing and after walking the site you can swim there."
