so... here's a question about stellenbosch uni. and the only reason i'm asking is coz i've spent the past 5 years in dubai so i haven't really had the opportunity to find out these things or get to know them from friends over the years like other people who live in SA do, BUT i am starting in 2009 and i'd like to know all the details and stuff before i get the process started. anyway, when it comes to the res, (koshuis - i honestly just don't know what it is in proper english), what are the rules or specifications about curfew? does it just not exist or are there timings or what's the deal? and also... what's considered the best (and/or favorite) ladies' res.? thanks!

the ferrari man :
"My wife used to study there She told me Serruiria ; Nemesia ; Erica are tops Here is a site with all the rules and regulations If you perhaps need more info, Post your question under Travel - Africa - South Africa. There are a lot of locals who will also gladly help you."

[reposting this to get more response from south african citizens]: so... here's a question about stellenbosch uni. and the only reason i'm asking is coz i've spent the past 5 years in dubai so i haven't really had the opportunity to find out these things or get to know them from friends over the years like other people who live in SA do, BUT i am starting in 2009 and i'd like to know all the details and stuff before i get the process started. anyway, when it comes to the res, (koshuis - i honestly just don't know what it is in proper english), what are the rules or specifications about curfew? does it just not exist or are there timings or what's the deal? like, can i go out with my friends but have to be home around a certain time or can i just come back whenever i want? and also... what's considered the best (and/or favorite) ladies' res.? ...AND WHY? thanks! PS: any idea when i can start sending in my application?

Vango :
"No curfew. You can come and go as you please, but male visitors needs to be out of the koshuis by a certain time at night. Apply as soon as possible. I'll be sticking my head in a hornets nest if I give my opinion and reasons which ladies-res is the best, so I won't. Minerva is the biggest, I think."
Porgie :
"Congratulations on choosing one of the best universities South Africa has to offer! My alma mater! Vango is right. No curfew, but you need to be careful hanging out too late at night. Stellenbosch can suck you into becoming very reckless at times! I've overslept many classes, making it very difficult to pass some classes. I can't comment on which res is the best. All of them are great. The students will make you well at home. No matter what! Watch out for the first week, though. You'll be serenaded by boys and be asked to perform strange rituals. All good fun. I enjoyed every moment of it. Keep it real and let go! We had a guy that was asked to cross a muddy river before he became a true resident of the "koshuis". He refused and at that moment we were treated to beers and barbecues. No muddy river. He failed to make it! Minerva is great, but I had much more fun at Goldfields. Dunno if that res is still there. You, however, shouldn't go there. First-year students may be placed in any of the various residences, I think. So check up on this first. All of them are great, so don't worry. Look at Minerva here, and Nemesia, here They are the biggest residents for girls. I recently added myself as alumni in order to certify my degree online and the staff at the university was wonderful. If you have any other queries, please feel free to contact them personally. They are very helpful. Or call them. Use this to contact them, Have a wonderful time. Send in the application as soon as possible and don't spend a lot of time in the Neelsie, like I did!"
Jennifer D :
"Koshuis - res, students residence etc."
Jaime :
"Can I ask why you choosing Stellies and not UCT? Anyway we call it res here, there's no curfew or anything weird like that. You can go out anytime and come back anytime. You can start sending in application around mid-year of 2008."
cakes4africa :
"Porgie said it all. Good choice of varsity. Here´s all you need to know, or change the language into Afrikaans if you are more comfortable with it: The final closing date for applications is 30 June of the year before the accommodation is needed."
Roger C :
"The coolest guys are in Wilgenhof (Willows Rules!) Try to go for one of the older residences, they have all the great traditions. Don't live in the Neelsie - it damages academic performance!"
JAM2DMB :
"this is so exciting! i am changing universities also and will be starting in July at Stellenbosch. the womans residences are Erica, Harmonie, Heemstede, Huis Ten Bosch, Irene, Lydia, Minerva, Monica, Nemesia, Nerina, Serruria, and Sonop. I dont know which are the best though. You should send in your application soon. No curfew except for guests."
