"The only thing to do there is visit the nearby Angkor Vat ancient temple ruins. Was there in October with my GF and found Siem Riep pretty boring. Same with Phnom Penh too."

Hi All, My girlfriend and I are planning in SE Asia. We are planning to visit Cambodia first before travelling to Laos. Does anyone have any experiences of this route (more specifically Siem Reap to Louang Phabang), we are having a few problems finding a quick way to do this, as most routes seem to do it the other way around. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

African Farmer :
"A quick way? As in by air? Then you could transit via Bangkok. Going over land (bus) is done the same way (just in opposite direction) no matter if you go from Luang Prabang to Siem Reap or vice versa. There are only a limited number of border crossings open (in Laos and in Cambodia) and you have to enter/exit through them."

I am travelling to Siem Reap to see ANgkor Wat on 27 December and would be leaving on 30 December. Please help me choose a good hotel somewhere upto 200 USD for a night.I am travellng with my family. Suggest me a hotel which offers good tours which are safe and good for foreign tourists. and also which offers insights into Cambodian culture through its ambience. help needed soon

Stevil74 :
"Hi, not sure about the best hotel, I stayed in a guesthouse while in Siem Reap. There are a couple of big Hotels and Spas in Siem Reap which you should be able to find on the internet. As to safe tours for tourists, all hotels and guesthouses offer tours as well as most travel shops in the town. It's very safe and easy, the temple complex is well organised with lots of places to get food and water (even ice creams) and you can choose to stay on the main trails or head a little further off the beaten track and see the Indiana Jones type temples in the jungle. There are a lot of temples apart from Angkhor Wat so you will need to have a couple of full days, including a sunrise at Angkhor and sunset at the temple on the hill. Both are spectacular."

"Stevil has helped you many. All the hotel has good tours exploring the temples in Siem Reap. You need to spend 3 full days for the temples including the boat trip on the Tonle Sap lake. It's very scenic in the sunset or early in the morning where you can see local people living nearby the lake. There are many major hotels in Siem Reap. Please check them out here, please book the room as soon as possible as they are always fully booked in the period you go to Siem Reap. -->Recommended / --->recommended And these are small ones but good service and good price. -->recommended --> recommended You can contact with vidotour as they are one of the best travel agencies in Indochina ( Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam). They can provide you lower prices than that on those websites of those hotels. ( P.S : I'm not a travel agent. And any more questions about Cambodia, you can contact me. )"

"This is from a letter that I sent to some friends. We travel on a much smaller budget than you do so it doesn't apply to much for your situation. Siem Reap is considered to be a safe town. There are hotels that range from super cheap to total luxury. please check out this site. In Siem Reap: Accommodation: Enjoy Guest House, 2 blocks from Bar Street, Craig and Lexy own the place and will take care of you. Molly Malone’s costs a little more but has 4 poster beds and is quite nice. Of course there are all kinds of hotels here from$1000 a night to $5 a night. Drinking: Dead Fish Bar; great architecture and crocodiles to feed. Bar street of course with about 20 clubs offering everything and nothing. Try the Funky Monkey or the bar at the Enjoy for good company and fewer tourists. Food: The Funky Monkey has the best western food in town and don’t miss their Quiz night on Thursday. It’s a blast. Viva, Mexican food that is good but not great. A good selection of Tequila. Dead Fish Café; Good food and as their sign say’s “We don’t serve no dog, cat or worm” In the Afternoon hang out at Aqua. Its out toward the bus stop. Great music and a large pool for cooling off. Foods OK as well. In both Phonm Phen and Siem Reap there are pizza bars that use Weed as a seasoning and it will knock you down if you are not careful. Drugs; Stay away from all powders. They are usually really pure heroin and can kill you with a small dose. This happens often as the sellers say its cocaine and one California sized line will bring back memories of Pulp Fiction with no good guy there with a bottle of Adrenalin and a heart needle. The smoke is Ok and occasionally really good. The Pharmacies have just about any thing you can think about and no hassles. There are a couple of Markets in Siem Reap but nothing spectacular. Many of the Small shops have great Knock off Cambodian artifacts and there might even be some real stuff once in a while. Remember, They will not let you take most stuff out of the country. Be careful! Angkor Wat is wonderful and not just one site. You can get away from the tourists by visiting any of the hundreds of temples that are not the tourist norm. Angkor, Bayon and Ta Prohm is where they filmed the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie. Very picturesque. Depending on where you are in Cambodia the prices vary from similar to Thailand to a little higher. I have found very inexpensive lodging in Phnom Phen and prices to be somewhat higher in Siem Reap. Probably because of the popularity of Angkor Wat. Remember everything, and I mean everything is for sale in Cambodia. Most of the serious grifters in the world end up there at some point in time so hold tight to your wallet. Keep a small amount of local currency in one pocket and the bulk of your pocket money in the other. If stopped by one of the three police agency's pull out the small denomination cash when they want the bribe and you might even be able to argue them down a little. If you pull out the big bucks it’s gone. I have a friend who takes a book everywhere he goes. If he gets stopped by the cops he just sits down and pulls out the book and starts reading. Waits them out! He usually gets off Scott free. Don't ever run or try to dodge the military police. They would just as soon shoot you as look at you. You are safer to hire a driver than renting a bike. Just trust me on this. It’s worth it. I have more if you need it and check out this site for some inside expat info.... -"

Powergirl :
"You are going in a high season. Hotel rates - abit pricey. You can consider a better hotel if you prefer walking distance... for example to restaurant and market place for shopping. I have stayed at Hotel De La Paix. It's pricey but I got good tour guide and reliable tuk tuk guy and very very clean room. check out this website if you want hotel that can fit your budget... Enjoy your holidays!"
