Discussion on Pyongyang

rarefind :

SEOUL, South Korea - Friday, October 20 2006. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il expressed regret about his country's nuclear test to a Chinese delegation and said Pyongyang would return to international nuclear talks if Washington backs off a campaign to financially isolate the country, a South Korean newspaper reported Friday. If the U.S. makes a concession to some degree, we will also make a concession to some degree, whether it be bilateral talks or six-party talks," Kim was quoted as telling a Chinese envoy, the mass-circulation Chosun Ilbo reported, citing a diplomatic source in China. The delegation led by State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met Kim on Thursday and returned to Beijing later that day — ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's arrival in the Chinese capital Friday. China is viewed as a key nation in efforts to persuade the North to disarm, as it is the isolated communist nation's main trading partner..

Adam :
"He is a hard guy to figure out. Kim knows he is in deep trouble so I hope he shows regret. It is in his best interest to back down from his troubles. It is in his interest to not do another test."
baseballandbbq :
"How do you negotiate with that country? They change their tune every other week. They are incorrigible."
Kennyp :
"Kim Jong II has no real regret for any of his actions. If anyone can talk some sense into him, that's great. Does it really matter who it is?"
Speedfreak :
"No and No. China should be taking the lead and spanking its misbehaved child neighbor. They want to be a leader, now is their chance to stand up and do something. Time to open their borders to the N. Korean refugees. They could easily absorb them. Kim IJ is living on borrowed time."
Melchizedek :

They have suggested before that they might be willing to talk or to move away from the development of nuclear weapons. But each time they just seem to continue on the path towards making the bomb. Are they serious this time about talking and maybe even disarming in exchange for aid and security gaurentees? What is the fate of the current regime in Pyongyang? Do they already have nukes?

scruffycat :
"No... NOrth Korea's leader is a nutcase. He will continue to toy with the minds of the world's leaders and he will continue to starve his own people. He is out of touch with reality."
Michael N :
"Yes, North Korea has a few nuclear weapons. I doubt any amount of bargaining or negotiating will get them to give them up. They are too valuable to their national security. Will they continue to develop and improve their nuclear weapons in return for aid and security guarantees? Yes, I think they are serious about that. Their economy is weak, and they know they need help. They have good reason to fear the United States, China, Japan, and South Korea; their fears are not totally irrational. As to the fate of the current regime--don't expect to see any changes for twenty or more years. However, honest brokering by the six parties involved in the talks can make them much less of an outlaw state, and we can all live with that."
ArgleBargleWoogleBoo :
"We should send in Rambo (or one of the other warmonger idiots on YA) and extract Kim from his secret bunker, take him to Washington, and let Cheney torture him just for fun."
igi :
"preparing for war with Iran"
mlee :
"How do you say "Suckers!" in Korean? We'll know for sure about Pyongyang when we see the mushroom cloud. USA will never invade North Korea like we did Iraq, why? 1) NK actually has got the goods. 2) NK doesn't have any resources we can exploit."
rense :
"If you were North Korean faced with the potential takeover of your country by a country like the United States, would you give up your only chance to keep the US off your back? I hope not, because if they took their eyes off of the US for one minute, we would be on their doorstep declaring that they attacked one of our ships or some oddity like that. I don't think disarming by the North Koreans would make any sense to them, they are not stupid. The y just want free trade and to be left alone by the United States."
charro c :
"No,is like telling China to disarm, or Israel to disarm."
Uncle Joe :

This website claims to be an outlet for news from North Korea. Does anyone know if it is genuine or is it some kind of parody? >

massadaman :
"From the site: "While most of the world's population have to deal with dictators and mud-slinging capitalists who lie to citizens to gain their votes...." It's a fair comment"
warren_zevon_1 :
"All to real, I'm afraid. Mass delusion at its finest!"
The Fonz :
"looks like someone bashing America to me,not genuine."
Another Garcia :
"Wow! I just checked it out and my gut tells me it has to be parody. But they worked hard on the content there so I'm wondering if anybody would go through all that trouble unless they were a really bad propaganda agent of the N.Korean govt who came to work one morning to find :"Create website for westerners thinking we just like them - have done by 1pm." LOL"
zeggy :
"Looking at some of the links on it, it looks pretty real to me. there's some real heavy stuff in there about America, just the sort of opinions you would expect from North Korea. With Pyongyang being a real place in North Korea, I wouldn't have thought they would have got away with creating a site like this for a joke. Looks pretty genuine to me!!"
angie :
"It is a Hoax site. It has been done extremely well though and has been difficult to establish its authenticity."
lady from the other day :
"It's a frikken joke.. rude and ignorant."
