Don’t let the name of this restaurant fool you because there’s nothing Swiss about this African paradise. The Swiss Bistro in Oudtshoorn is just that, a dining paradise. Let me start with the restaurant itself and its sandy peach concrete as you enter the lovely outdoor patio introducing you to picnic bench styled tables

These are oil paintings of the Karoo - a beautiful area in the heart of my homeland, South Africa. On a trip to Graaff Reinet, we stopped at a farm outside Oudtshoorn called "Red Hill Farm" which nestles in the eonite hills. I was inspired and spent a very interesting morning with my canvas anchored to the dusty road with rocks while I tried to cap

I can’t actually comment on the quality of the food because we didn’t get any until nearly an hour after it was ordered – and it was only one meal and NOT what we ordered! When we complained, the Manager told us to “f*** off”. The selection and prices looked excellent so my wife and I decided to try the Swiss Bistro. We arrived fairly early and we saw no other customers there apart from a family down the garden who were just finishing their meal. The waitress was friendly and helpful so we ordered a bottle of wine to go with two steak meals. The wine arrived promptly. However... 30 minutes after ordering we asked the waitress where the food was and she said it was being prepared, but all their food was freshly cooked so took longer. We were happy with that response. Another similar request 10 minutes later got the same response. By now, the restaurant had filled up and we had seen customers order and get their dishes delivered to them whilst we just waited. The dishes were often Pizzas, but medium rare steak does not take long to cook. After waiting 45 minutes, I asked to see the Manager. I followed the waitress to the tills where she went into the back after passing a youngish guy with black curly hair working at the till. She returned and indicated that the guy she had already passed was the Manager! If he were the Manager, I cannot understand why she had not taken me straight to him rather than going in the back to find him? They both insisted that he was the Manager. He did not even pretend to apologize but simply said that there were notices round the restaurant warning that meals may be slow as “they were freshly cooked”. The menus were written exclusively in English but all the notices I could see were in Afrikaans which I and most foreign tourists would not understand! After a discussion, he said that the meals would take no more than another 5 minutes. I said thank you and returned to the table. After 3-4 minutes, the waitress came to the table with just one of the meals. (If you’re serving two people you bring both meals at the same time. I suspected the other was still not ready and, therefore, would not be with us within the 5 minutes the Manager promised). The steak was covered in basting sauce – I had made it very clear when ordering that I hated basting sauce. The waitress had clearly understood that when I ordered as she had agreed they would cook it without the sauce. I then had a dilemma. 45 minutes, only one meal, and not what I had ordered. If I asked them to fix it, it could be another 45 minutes or more. We decided we had had enough and we went to leave. I paid for the bottle of wine despite there being some left in the bottle to avoid any dispute. I then had a few more polite words with the Manager. I was not nice to him because he had not helped us and had, at no point, apologized for the situation, but I was polite at all times and did not swear once. Up till then I never considered adding any reviews of the restaurant to the Internet, but, during the heated discussion he said “you can f**k off then”. (Shame he didn’t say this BEFORE I paid for the wine)! This “irritated” me, so I went back in to the restaurant to tell the rest of the customers what he had said. Whilst I was away, he told my wife he was not the Manager. When I returned, he yet again insisted that he WAS the Manager! We left. At no point did I swear at him or any of the staff. Menu looks good and cheap and may taste nice, but do allow a long time for it and do not expect to get what you ordered – and do expect them to be abusive if you complain! Postscript:- We were told elsewhere that the curly headed guy was not the Manager and that the Owner and his family were invariably in the bar. We were also told that tourists were generally advised not to use the Swiss Bistro. I echo that advice.
