Milky Way - Italy

The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek Γαλαξίας (Galaxias) sometimes referred to simply as "the Galaxy"), is a barred spiral galaxy that is part of the Local Group of galaxies. Although the Milky Way is one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe, the Galaxy has special significance to humanity as it is the home galaxy of the planet Earth. The Milky Way galaxy is visible from Earth as a band of light in the night sky, and it is the appearance of this band of light which has inspired the name for our galaxy. Some sources hold that

Discussion on Milky Way

bronxkid112 :

Why do I sometimes read that the nearest galaxy is the Milky Way? Are we not part of the Milky Way?

The Lazy Astronomer :
"Correct. But it's like asking what is the nearest star. Its the Sun (Sol). A more correct question is what is the nearest galaxy to our own."
Dietrich V :

I have a concern, Yahoo ran a piece last week telling how many millenia ago the earth was bombarded with rays from the milky way. These rays destoyed life and accelerated it as well as produced a plethora of bacteria killing and mutating animal growth. The milky way hasnt been able to introduce the rays for a while but on December 21st 2012, the earth is in the path and will be bombarded with these rays. I calculated this through astronomy. But when i type in the date on the net, the date comes up with a Mayan end date of the world/new beginning on December 21st 2012. My question is, What will happen to earth/people when we get bombarded with the rays???? the Mayans predicted this thousands of years ago???I have a phd in physics but I would appreciate knowledge from someone in bacterial research on the milky way. I would also like to know why the government has built underground facilities that block a nuclear warhead but also are impervious to bacteria and viral outbreaks??

Isti H :
"that is a predicament but there is a problem that the earth is not in the same path has it was the earth moves slightly including the entire solar system. basically it could be true that we will be. underground facilities were developed for viral impacts like you said. But if we tweak it a little we can prove it to help us. But the rays can be helpful to us because they can destroy large amounts of harmful bacteria."
Eugene N :
"PLease post a link to the article. I don't believe you. Where is the source of the radiation and it's rotational speed of it and our solar system around the milky way. I don't believe we know it to 1000 years let alone 1 day. We had no way to measure any radiation millenia ago so how would we know anything like that happened??? If the Mayans were so wise and omnipotent, why are they basically gone ?"
One Tuff piece of Schist :
"You are a moron"
Gevera Bert :
"I can't answer all of your questions. I don't even understand them all. I know that on 12-21-2012 the earth will be in a special alignment with the Milky Way at dawn which only happens every 26,000 years (due to precession of the equinoxes). This date corresponds with the beginning of the 13th Baktun of the Mayan Long Count calendar (NOT the end of the calendar). The book "Maya Cosmogenesis" by John Major Jenkins has extensive information on this alignment."
Anish R. :

1. Which of the following is the correct order of the components of the Milky Way galaxy, from outermost to innermost? A. thick disk, thin disk, extreme disk, galactic halo, black hole B. thin disk, extreme disk, thick disk, galactic halo, black hole C. galactic halo, thick disk, thin disk, extreme disk, black hole D. extreme disk, thick disk, thin disk, galactic halo, black hole 2. In what part of the Milky Way is our solar system located? A. thick disk B. thin disk C. extreme disk D. galactic halo 3. The Milky Way's central bulge is located in the middle of the galaxy and is mainly a birth place for new stars. True or False?

John W :
"1. is B, if you go from the outside - in. 2. Well, we're about 1/2 way out to the edge from the center, the center being about 27,000 lightyears away.. I'm guessing B. 3. I'm afraid to answer off the top of my head - I'd guess that's true, as there is a lot of dust & gas in that area. But... research it first."
John T :
"First answer has to be C. The Galactic Halo is the furthest from the center of the galaxy. The Solar System is 25,000 light years from the galactic center... so, I'd say the "thin disk". Number 3 is open to debate. Recently, scientists have changed their theories about the ability of new stars to form near the galactic center. Disruption due to the effects of the central black hole were considered to preclude it... however, here's a link that says it is happening at a remarkable rate: Traditional theories say that new stars form further away from the center... so, depending upon your definition, the central bulge can be an excellent birthplace for new stars... or not. Personally, I would say the answer to #3 is True."

Amazing what you miss with all the light pollution any more.

Like a fork piercing a fried egg, a giant finger of hydrogen gas is poking through our Milky Way Galaxy from outside, astronomers using CSIRO radio telescopes at Parkes and Narrabri have found.

Distinguished Intergalactic Explorers, you know how difficult it is to use a galactic center supermassive star for a speed-bump. Well!! after 3 days crisscrossing a galaxy I call Milky Way I did the swing-by trick, but something went wrong and I was flung 26093 ly into one of the galaxy's arms! I'm here today to tell and show you: We Are Not Alone!
