Lincolnshire has played a great part in the early discovery and exploration of America. Some of it's achievements have even been credited to others. It's influence on America continued even into the twentieth century. Here we'll test your knowledge of these connections. Around 80% of the Pilgrim Fathers who sailed on the Mayflower were Lincolnshire Puritans. Contrary to popular belief,Their journey began from a small Lincolnshire port before the STOPPED IN AT PLYMOUTH on the way to America to take on supplies. Their original port of departure was: options South Killingholme South Ferriby Marshchapel Ingoldmells

"south ferriby, from someone who lives in lincolnshire, its the only place near a river which is in lincolnshire..."
Biggie :
"Many of the Pilgrim leaders were from Lincolnshire but had left the county years before, having relocated to Holland. When the Pilgrims left for North America, they sailed on the Mayflower from London, the ship having arrived in London two weeks before from La Rochelle, France."
the_lipsiot :
"Hi Jay, As far as I was aware the Pilgrim Fathers set sail from the banks of the Humber River at a place called Immingham Creek. There is a plaque in Immingham today that commerorates this. Of the places you list : Marshchapel is inland and Ingoldmells is too far down the coast towards Skeggy. The closest of the other two to Immingham is South Killingholme, although this isn't on the coast either, but South Ferriby is."

"Do you mean Lincolnshire in United Kingdom ? There is a fantastic Cathedral there, which houses one of the few remaining copies of The Magna Carta."
Hobilar :
"I am open to correction on this but I thought I read somewhere that the Pilgrim Fathers tried to leave from Boston (Lincs) but were arrested and spent some time in prison before finally managing to take ship at Plymouth (Devon)."
JOHN B :

This Butcher had just started at the local butchers and was confronted by a very smartly dressed and well spoken woman (Like H. Bucket). She ordered a 5lb Lincolnshire duck. The new butcher went down stairs to the storeroom and could not find a Lincolnshire duck anywhere. So he just picked up a 5lb duck went upstairs and started to wrap it up. "My Good man, give that duck to me" She then inserted her index finger up the ducks A*se. "This not a Lincolnshire duck, i want a Lincolnshire duck!" The butcher returned downstairs where he was confronted by the Manager. He said " That's Mrs. Ponsonby- Smythe and she is an expert at all things, by just using her finger. Here's a Lincolshire duck, take it to her. He went upstairs when Mrs. P. said "give it to me" and again put her finger up it's a*se. "That's better, i'll take it" She went on to say "you are new to this area, where do you come from" The butcher turned his back on her, dropped his trousers and bent over and said" YOU TELL ME!"

Nigel Brown often gets asked when he's going to set up his own cookery school to share his vast knowledge of culinary expertise, so with this in mind, research is taking place to find out how popular the idea is and what kind of skills people would like to learn.
