Le Mans - France

Coordinates: 48°0′18″N, 0°11′52″E Sport MotorsportThe city is best known for its connection with motorsports. There are actually two separate racing tracks at Le Mans, though they share certain portions. The smaller is the Bugatti Circuit (named after Ettore Bugatti, founder of the car company bearing his name), a relatively short permanent circuit which is used for racing throughout the year. The longer and more famous Circuit de la Sarthe is composed partly of public roads, which are closed to the public when the track is in use for racing, and has been host to the famous 24 Hours

Discussion on Le Mans

Just Me :

I'm interested in watching the Le Mans series racing, in particularly the Peugot team now that my favourite driver Jacques Villeneuve drives for them. But Le Mans is a very poorly covered sport in North America - much worse than even F1 - and I don't have a clue where to catch it to watch. Are there any online sites that either stream or make downloads of the races available? It's a long shot, but I thought I'd ask. I should have added that I'm talking about the European series of Le Mans racing, not the American series. I'm not sure how related the two are, but the races I'm looking for are in Spain, France, etc.

Gregnir :
"You can watch the 24 Hours of LeMans on the SPEED channel. As I recall from previous years, SPEED shows around 20 hours of live coverage. Also, you can listen on-line to Radio LeMans, a station staffed by Brits and they are on air for the entirety of the race. You should be able to link to Radio LeMans through the official 24 Hours of LeMans website. Ok, you were referring to the LMS series with races at Paul Ricard (Mar 25-26), The 1000 KM of Monza (April 13-14-15), The 1000 KM of Valencia (May 4-5-6), The 1000 KM of Nürburgring (June 29-30 & July 1), The 1000 KM of Spa (Aug 17-18-19), The 1000 KM of Silverstone (Sept 14-15-16) and The Mil Milhas Brasil (Nov 9-10-11). To the best of my knowledge (and unfortunately) they are not shown onTV in North America and I would be really surprised if a webcast is available. It's a longshot at best, but you might consider downloading TVU Player (it's a free download) and check to see if Star Sports shows any of the races - I've caught a couple of the A1GP races on theree. As for Villeneuve, I believe he's only doing the 24 Hours of LeMans, rather than the rest of the LMS series."
RealTruth :
"There have been a number of Le Mans races on TV. I watched the Sebring race recently. The link below shows the TV schedule. NBC, CBS and the Speed Channel show the Le Mans races."
Jam_Til_Impact :
"For the European races, it's just not good. 24 Hours at Le Mans is about all you will get. Speed Channel is running a lot of other races that are along those lines, like the ALMS and the Rolex Sports Car Series, but for the European races, we are all left out in the cold. No 24 Hours at Nurburgring, which I really wanted to see, even the 1000 kM race would have been nice to see. Oh well. At least we get the Le Mans race, and really, pretty good coverage of it. Except when they bail out for some BS practice sessions for NASCAR. I think last year there was 18 of the 24 hours covered, maybe 20 hours."
jimG :

I recently ran into a 1970 Pontiac Le Mans 4dr.,hard top.It has a 350 2bbl with 96K miles, and the guy wants $700 for it, It has all the original chrome except the back "LeMans" on the panel. It also has some cracks in the dashboard but what 30+ car doesn't. Is this a really good deal or am i just getting sucker'd? Just thought i ould just get some "expert" advice.

fordman :
"Is it running? If the body isn't rusted out and it runs, what more could you ask. I had a 64,65,67 LeMans and they all had 326 ci. engines. I don't know if it is the orignal engine or not. I would say go for it. But then again, I haven't seen the car. You could have a mechanic check it out for you before you buy it. good luck."
jumbobret :
"I did not think they made the Le Mans in 4 door, I could be wrong. I just do not like big ol' 4 door cars."
talon699 :
"Not worth as much as the 2 door in terms of a muscle car, But it is worth more now that when it was new if it has all the original equipment and has not been customized beyond restoration . That`s a good deal, for an original 37 year old car. Have a gander here to see some others.http://www.cardomain.com/MakeModel/Pontiac/Lemans/all/all/all/1970"
dodge man :
"they made plenty of the le mans in 4 doors and they weren't bad cars, the mileage is low on that one,for 700 bucks if it runs drives and looks good that isn't a bad deal at all,you can make the 4 door cars look really good, and you have to look at it like this ,there's not many of those cars around anywhere 2 or 4 door,so that would be a good one to fix and drive ,a lot of people are finding these old 4 door cars and re-doing them, you just don't see then any more, good luck on it,hope it works out."
turkey :
"need a little more info. Does it run and drive? is it rusted real bad? does it drive good? what needs replacement? If it is in good shape and needs very little i would say go for it. a 400 or 455 will drop right in there and it will cost way less then a GTO. but you can still have a ton of fun with it. Makes a great sleeper. and yes that is the orginal size engine. pontiac replace the 326 in 68 with the 350"
Firebird :
"If you weren't specifically looking for one when you "ran into" it, then it's not a good deal. That's true of every older car you're ever going to see. You should know whether you want one or not without asking us. Just asking tells us that you had no plans to buy a 70 Lemans. Stop. This is a car that has no collector value at all, and it never will. Even if it was a huge collector's item, you shouldn't change your life goals when you see a collector car for sale when you go out behind the barn to pee. Never do that. But again, this is not a collector's item, no way, no how. It's just an old car."
Eric :
"if you can get ANY car made in 1970 that isn't a total peice of crap for $700, you've found yourself a deal! if you want that kind of car get it NOW! they are only going to keep going up in price."
kenny_scarface :

I just heard a story about two brothers racing in the European Le Mans Series, one was the youngest ever at 16. Does anyone know their names?

Gorilla :
"The brothers names are Max and Tom Chilton. They raced in this years Le Mans for Zytek Motorsports. Here is another article on them that you might find interesting."
