Khartoum - Sudan

Khartoum (الخرطوم al-Kharṭūm "Elephant Trunk" (see etymology) is the capital of Sudan and of Khartoum State. It is located at the point where the White Nile, flowing north from Uganda, meets the Blue Nile, flowing west from Ethiopia. The merger of the two Niles is known as "the Mogran". The merged Nile flows north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.The city proper has a population of well over a million inhabitants, making it the second-largest city in the country, but forms with its neighbours, linked by bridges, Khartoum North (al-Khartūm Bahrī) and Omdurman (Umm Durmān) a

Discussion on Khartoum

Timothy D :

I know that traveling outside the capital of Sudan (Khartoum) is unsafe at the moment, but what about inside the city? Is it safe for a white American tourist to travel to Khartoum currently? I went on the government travel website and all it says is that areas outside of 25 miles from the capital are hazardous, nothing about the security in the capital.

Master Anarchy :
"Nothing is safe there, but as a Westener, you would be in Islamic territory, where rulership desires to grow in wealth, if not in status in the eyes of those who invaded Iraq with their Star-sheep Trippers. Go. Figure."
nitebearer :
"I would say not likely too safe. Find your self a good interpreter (through good sources like foreign media ppl or embassy ppl). Find a good bodyguard if possible and affordable (same sources). Travel with others in a group. Less problems with being targeted by local pickpockets and small time kidnappers. Avoid getting into situations that place you in the hands of the law or soldiers. You could just disappear. No going out at nite alone. Walk around with an air of confidence and business like but not arrogance or looking like your afraid of your shadow. Know where your going and go there, no stopping and looking at road signs etc, memorize the maps to where your going, even other routes, incase. Enjoy your visit."
telovelace :
"It depends on who you are. I've travelled to many "third world" countries including those with "restrictions" and I have never had a problem, but I am a polite, respectful person, relatively knowledgeable of local customs. As a middle aged white person travelling alone in Africa, I've found that there were far more people looking out for me, than those harboring ill feelings. Ask yourself why you are going there. Are your intentions honorable?"
hairobsessed :
"yes, i am from sudan and i travel their at least once a year the capital is very safe everyone is very nice and their are some tourist from foriegn countries they get treated the as everyone else no one would hurt you if you went there i personally dont remember going anwhere outside of the capital so i dont know about that"

I'd like to know if Khartoum, Sudan is safe to visit. I'd like to go for a teaching job

Treebeard :
"Generally speaking, it is safe, because most of the Darfur activity occurs hundreds of miles away from Khartoum. I hear Khartoum is really cleaning up, because of the Chinese oil money... but still, what's the visit for?"
Adam :
"Hello, there are currently LOTS of restrictions on Sudan. You cant bring anything back at all, as its under embargo, etc...very similar to Cuba actually. Youre asking for trouble if you go there. Go to the state dept website and see if there are any updates."
elf2002 :
"I was in Khartoum earlier this year (Feb) for work. It is fairly safe -- and, as the first answerer mentioned, the oil revenue is trickling in. There's been a few new restaurants open, a shopping mall, etc. The UN and diplomatic missions allow families to be posted there and there are several expatriate couples. My colleagues did tell me that there had been some protests (I think it was a labor union protest when I was there) and people have been arrested but I didnt hear them complain about safety. I walked in a group at night a few times without problems. The US does have restrictions and sanctions so those are important to check if they apply to your circumstances."
discovery :
"Hi Aden, well am also thinking of going to work in Sudan as an accountant.I would say it is relatively safe but not in all areas..you have to be on the look out all the time.Let me know if you do decide to go work there so that we can touch base with you!!all the best in your teaching there!(if you do decide to go)"
phoneguy955 :
"I haven't been there but I have spent many years in Africa. From what I heard from people who have lived and worked there it is the safest and friendliest place on the planet."
sk4193 :

areas in khartoum where indian expatriates live.

Natasha :
"I think, the best residential areas in Khartoum where u can find indians are Riyad, Amarat, Garden City, Alsafa District & Arkawit. Hope that helps u...."
Sudani :
"the best living area's in khartoum for expatriates to live is Al Manshya, Riyadh, Al Amarat,AL SAFA.keep in mind it is not cheap ..rent / month maight be 1500$ approx. Enjoy ur residence in Sudan :)"

As Sudan is slowly emerging from the scourge of a long-standing civil war, the ground is being set for musicians and artists who have so far found it difficult to promote their music and artwork. Asim Gorashi, an accomplished and compelling oud and violin player from Khartoum, Sudan, is one of them.

Condoleezza Rice flies to Britain this week to meet a crisis entirely of our creation. They have no strategy for the continuing occupation of Afghanistan. They are hanging on for dear life and praying for something to turn up. Think Gordon in Khartoum and of politicians who no longer read history expecting others to die for their glory.
