Isle of Wight - United Kingdom

GeologyThe Isle of Wight is made up from a wide variety of different rock types which date from Early Cretaceous times (around 127 million years ago) to the middle of the Palaeogene (around 30 million years ago). All the rocks found on the Island are sedimentary, made up of mineral grains from previously existing rocks. These are all consolidated to form the rocks that can be seen on the Island today, such as limestone, mudstone and sandstone. Rocks on the Island are very rich in fossils and many of these can be seen exposed on the beaches as the cliffs erode.Cretaceous rocks, normally red,

Discussion on Isle of Wight

dagaffman :

Hi, i'm thinking of popping over to the Isle of Wight tomorrow. I've never been before. Will probably make a day of it. Anyone been before (or live there) and know of good things to do, places to see etc??? Cheers.

"Call me Dave" :
"le Isle Blanc, as it will become known following Tony Blairs final sell out to the EU, is not really worth the hassle of a visit, if you are down Dorset/Hampshire way go to the Mueum of Army Fighting Vehicles at Bovingdon Camp, or national motor Museum at Beaulieu."
mark n fordman :
"i went last w.end, its good over there,go to the needles, and go down to the beech on the ski lift, also at the same complex there are all sorts of little shops and things to see and do. cowes is good to sit with a beer and watch the boats, weather permitting. have a good day."
K :
"Go to Alun Bay, it is a really good day out."
chicky :
"If you go to the needles and visit the old battery it has a nice cliff side walk to get to it and has a lovely quite view over looking the sea and the needles it is a lovely place to be when the sky is clear and the sun is shinning. I would not recommend visiting Sandown as it is a typical seaside town stuck in the 80's it is ok if you want to see lots of hotels and amusements. If you are driving then it would make it easier to explore the island however you can get a cheap day pass for the train system that they have their but you are limited to where it stops. Bembridge is a quiet town with a pebble beach and life boat centre. Shanklin is a smaller quieter version of Sandown with a sand beach and Shanklin chine is makes a nice walk around."
yvonne b :
"I have been the last two years and loved it (I was really surprised) Stayed at the Windcliffe Manor Niton but it has recently been taken over and turned into an 'Enchanted' Inn! The Garlic farm was great and the West coast lovely -avoid the busy Sandown and Shanklin ares!!"
Helena :
"Alum bay is quite nice - lots of pretty coloured sand."
chicagosgirl :

we are taking the kids to the isle of wight in october, what can you recomend for us to do while there

Boy Wonder :
"- Carisbrooke Castle - The zoo - Go to the beach and make sand sculptures of different coloured sand - Blackgang Chine (if it is open out of season) - There is a place where you can see sweets being made and try them - The waxworks museum - Open top bus tour - Fishing trips"
amybecsangel :
"I have been to the isle of white about 5 times and the kids always enjoyed going to that place where they let you fill things up with different coloured sanda and the kids love the stairlift there that takes you down to the beach. Last time i went there i made a map of the island out of coloured sand. It is not to expensive either. There is also rides and other things for the kids there."
natalie2005 :
"I went for my hols last year and had a fab time. My favourite was Amazon World: And also the cat sanctuary: There's also Dinosaur Isle that has lots for the kids: If the weathers good there are some amazing beaches. Have a great time!"
SUE G online :
"the isle of wight is a lovely place and there is lots to do, not so sure whether the attractions are still open in october though, but there would still be lots of places to go, you can get to see most of it in a week because it is so small, but pretty"
murphywingedspur :
"Loads of places to go! Blachgang Chine, Waxworks Museum, Brading, Carisbrook Castle, Alum Bay, Godshill, Arreton Manor, Osbourne House, Robin Hill, The Zoo,"
Paul H :
"I live there. October is just about the end of the Season but the weather should still be mild enough for you to enjoy yourself. As per all the above listed things, go to the Isle of Wight Tourism website and check the opening times. Kids...Boys? There is also a Steam Railway at Havenstreet. As you are ChicagoGirl are you coming from not driving? The public transport is pretty good, but in my opinion expensive. Generally, from wherever you are it will be about £2.50 (5 bucks) to get to Newport (The central town). Plenty of places are easily accessible by bicycle - which you can hire."
njn001 :
"try the attached link, very useful "
Jess :

Places to go this october with nine year old boys and a 16 year old girl. Thanks

Sinners :
"Osborne House (Queen Victoria's pad) Steam Railway (old fashioned trains) The Needles Park (coloured sand and cable chair lift) plus loads of other stuff, have a look at the link below to find out more..."
"i went to isle of wight when i was younger and i remember we went to black gang chine it was a theme park and what i can remember it was good.we also went to the needles and you can make stuff out of the colour sand but the chair lift down scared the c**p out of me."

No information on the new forest would be complete without a mention of the stunning Isle of Wight. A county in its own right, the Isle of Wight, and in particular The Needles, can be seen from many shoreline vantage points in the New Forest. There are excellent cliff top walks to Christchurch, or along the sea wall to Lymington taking in the magnificent views of the Solent and the Needles lighthouse on the Isle of Wight. No visit to The New Forest would be complete without stopping off at Milford on Sea. Milford on Sea services and business directory.

Lepe Country Park adjoining Calshot Spit is located on the very south-eastern fringe of the New Forest National Park, a few miles from Beaulieu. There are fabulous views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. From nearby Lymington you can take the ferry across to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.
