Irkutsk - Russian Federation

HistoryIrkutsk grew out of the winter quarters established (1652) by Yakov Pokhabov for gold-trading and for the collection of the fur tax from the Buryats. The town gained official city rights from the government in 1686. The first road connection between Moscow and Irkutsk, the Siberian Road (Сибирский Тракт, Sibirsky Trakt), was built in 1760. "Is she a good swimmer?"

"walmart, If your girlfriend is 40 yrs of age and below, she will defintely have a hard time getting a tourist visa. slim to none. the only way to see her is go there and meet her. if she insist of seeing your here in the states. It wont happen unless she has diplomatic visa. email me if you have any more questions."
Of_Mice_and_Men :
"Good luck in getting conned."
Kevin :
"Here's the link to the State Department website. It has all the necessary forms. If she is single, and under 40, she will not get a tourist visa. Even if she applied today, she would not get an appointment at the embassy for the next 30 days. And unless you have been there to meet her during the past 2 years, you will not get a fiance/spouse/immigration visa for her (and the processing time is 6-12 months). In my experience, girls saying they will come here without you going there first are all scams. No self respecting Russian woman will fly around the world to meet a strange man, in a strange country."

"My wife studied there. Are you talking about the annular eclipse in spring? I would advise going to see the total eclipse (August 1, 2008), which will pass slightly further west (through Novosibirsk and Barnaul) and then all the way towards China. I might end up going to see that one."
zondervleugels :
"Here's a website I found, with a travelogue of people who have been there. Contact them for more info, if you like. "
Wondering :

My girlfriend & I are planning to spend a couple of months in Irkutsk next year & want to rent an apartment to save on this possibe(being British), & how much does it cost?

Al Zymer :
Squeaky P :
"apartments are rented from private parties, thus you must find a private party to rent from. That is easy to do if you have a contact in irkutsk. if not try this one: "

"Irakust is an airport city with the population of 1000 or so. My husband is from there. Hope you don't go in the winter since it will be way below freezing."

Microsoft is planning to build a data center in Irkutsk (remember that from Risk?) in Siberia that will hold 10,000 servers. At least it should be easy to keep the servers cool.
