Galway - Ireland

Galway (Irish: Gaillimh) is the only city in the province of Connacht in the Republic of Ireland. The city is located on the west coast of Ireland. In Irish, Galway is also called Cathair na Gaillimhe: "City of Galway".The city takes its name from the Gaillimh river (River Corrib) that formed the western boundary of the earliest settlement, which was called Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe, or the fort at the bottom of the Gaillimh. The word Gaillimh means "stony" as in "stony river". (Alternative, more mythical, derivations are given in History of Galway.) The city also bears the nickname City of the

"Galway (official Irish name: Gaillimh) is the main city in the province of Connacht in Ireland and capital of County Galway. The city is located on the west coast of Ireland. In Irish, Galway is also called Cathair na Gaillimhe ("City of Galway"). The city takes its name from the Gaillimh river (River Corrib) that formed the western boundary of the earliest settlement, which was called Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe, or the fort at the bottom of the Gaillimh. The word Gaillimh means "stony" as in "stony river". (Alternative, more mythical, derivations are given in History of Galway). The city also bears the nickname The City of the Tribes, because fourteen[1] "Tribes" (merchant families) led the city in its Hiberno-Norman period. The term Tribes was originally a derogatory phrase from Cromwellian times. The merchants would have seen themselves as English nobility, and hence were loyal to the King. Their uncertain reaction to the siege of Galway by Cromwellian forces earned them this label, which they subsequently adopted in defiance. The population of the city was 71,983 at the most recent census in April 2006, making it the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, after Dublin and Cork, not using county boundaries to measure population as they are not a true measure of a greater urban area. Galway city is the only one in Ireland where the greater urban area lies within its city boundary and therefore appears to be larger than other cities where the greater urban area lies in two or more local authority areas. Hope this link will provide you some detail:"

"The weather in Galway in these months are generally wet cold and windy. Finding a job in Galway is dependent on what type of job, your level of english and your experience. There are two colleges in Galway National University of Ireland Galway and Galway-Mayo Institute of technology. They are two of the best colleges in the country, GMIT was the Sunday Times Institute of Technology of the year in 2005. Choosing between depends on what you wish to study. GTI is another options, although this is a post leaving cert college as apposed to full blown Teritary education. It is one of the best PLC colleges in Ireland. For finding a job, the best prospect is the Galway Advertiser free newspaper out every Thursday and has the most jobs on offer. Finding a place to live is the same story, it has the best accommodation listing for the city. The cost of living is high, but not as high as Dublin."

"the weather these days are extremly cold and wet..... it is hard enough to find a job but if you have good qualifications and english you shouldnt have trouble and especially this time coming up to christmas everywhere are looking for staff!!!!! colleges here are NUIG,GMIT and GTI.... the first two are the main and most popoulare while if you have trouble getting into them GTI is also good to... thats where i am and i love it!!"

I am looking to rent a 1 bedroom house/apartment in Galway. I was thinking either Woodquay, Doughiska or Rosscam. Anyone care to provide information on the average cost of rent, which is a better area to live in, are there areas that you enjoy more than the ones i picked? : It doesnt matter if its in Co. Galway or wherever, as long as it is easy to get to the main parts of Galway without car. Thank you. :D

itzii :
"hi, west side of the city is (in general) a better area to live in than the east side, but also more expensive. for a one bed place, expect to pay about 600-700 euro pcm for something decent. think about where u'll be working as well-traffic in galway can be hell and at rush hour it could take more than an hour to get from one side of the city to the other"
