I am a pretty good hiker and have done many hikes and camping trips in the wilderness in all seasons in the United States. I was planing to to a solo hiking trip for a few days in the French Alps. Anyone suggest any good gear besides from the basic winter camping gear? Any other suggestions would be nice too

i am flying to geneva next month to go skiing in the french alps. i need to get from geneva airport to tigne (ski resort) is there a train which goes direct? i know there is a train station at Bourg St-Maurice which is quite near but does anyone know of one even closer?

shoe s :
"no thats it"

"French Rail website returns Bourg St.-Maurice as the stop you want. I put in Geneve to Tigne and the site gave me Bourg St.-Maurice as my destination. There are 2 trains daily at 10h13 and 18h45. Each train stops at Chamberg, but I cannot tell if there's a change there or just a station stop. Here's the "SNCF" link: "
bozenmoon :
"Yes there are these two trains .Last station in the mountains is in fact Bourg Saint Maurice ( Alberville) .Then you are in Tigne, which is a whole region wit a couple of "cities",like Les Boisses,Les Brevieres,Le Chevril and,and....You will get around the lake with Buses or Cabs.Enjoy your vacation and especially the "Apres Ski ",and the nightlife !Have fun."

My partner and I are looking to buy a ski appartment in the French Alps which sleeps 4 to 6 people (2 bedrooms). It needs to be somewhere which can provide a winter and a summer income, so summer activities are important. Ideally we'll be able to ski directly back to the village/town from higher slopes. We'd like to spend no more than 300,000 Euros. Thanks.

"You can't go wrong with Avoriaz or Morzinne"
woofwoof :
"Please see our own apartment which is in the most beautiful setting in Thollon Les Memises overlooking Lake Geneva. The beauty of this area, is that it is a family friendly ski area with skiing to the back door, but with larger ski resorts (Chatel, Avoriaz, Les Gets, Morzine etc) all within easy reach. Additionally, there is genuine summer letting income as all lakeside activities are in easy reach. It should be an area of interest and you would pick up a really nice chalet property with your budget. There is also really good management agents nearby who can look after your property and direct lettings your way. Please contact if you wish to discuss further."

Geneva airport is one of the Alps major skiing airports, well positioned for many French and Swiss ski resort and a major hub for a range of ski transfer providers. Routes for ski transfers out of Geneva airport are probably the busiest ones in the entire Alps.

Lyon airport is right in the heart of the Rhone-Alps region. As the capital of the Rhone-Alps region, Lyon makes an excellent ski transfer hub and gateway to the many premier French ski resorts.

Rhine salmon could have special reason to celebrate New Year 2008. The Swiss have found a weapon in the battle against a French plan for a "fish taxi" to avoid the costs of construction for fish ladders to help migrating fish return to their spawning grounds in the Alps.
