Cuenca - Ecuador

Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador, capital of the Azuay province. It is located in the Sierra, the highlands of Ecuador at about 2500m (8200 ft) above sea level. Its full name is Santa Ana de los cuatro ríos de Cuenca. The city's cobblestone streets, towering cathedrals, and marble and whitewashed buildings give it a colonial air. Cuencanos, known for their traditional demeanor and conservative cultural values, match their 18th century surroundings.

beaver :

Cuenca Ecuador is an unknown city outside latinamerica, but the modernization and quality of life, cleaness etc. is breathtaking ! Do you agree?

Travel-expert :
"I agree completely! Cuenca is a very nice place, I went there in 2003 so I can't say much about the modernization but what I saw was a beautiful breathtaking city. I stayed at Hotel Oro Verde and it was as if I was staying at any other modern capital of Latin America. A friend of mine married there (to a guy from Cuenca) in 2003 and the wedding was at a hacienda nearby. I liked Cuenca very much, I wish I could go back and see for myself about this modernization that you speak about."
Ty H :
"Its great. I was surprised. Aolmost as good as Bogata. Much better than Cali."

I am spending the coming fall semester in Cuenca, and I'd like to start working on a list of things to see while I'm there...any suggestions?

shortstuff :
"Both of my daughters-in-law are from Ecuador. (Cuenca/Quito) It's too late to call them now to ask them what places you should see. Maybe I can add on to this answer tomorrow."
Marian30 :
"There are so many things to do in and around Cuenca. For example, if you want to visit historic places, or if you like dining out to delight your palate with delicious traditional dishes, you would probably want to go to down town Cuenca. If you like adventure, Cuenca is surrounded by mountains where you can do either hiking, mountain biking, or mountain climbing. You can also visit a great number of archaeological places. In other words, you will find so many things to do in that amazing city that you would not have time to get bored. I am giving you a link to the official guide to Cuenca, where you will find more details about the city, and what to do while visiting. Good luck!"

"in cuenca you have the cathedral that is really really nice. you have the central bank museum and there you have also some ruins of indian constructions. you can visit the rivers (4 in total) that are crossed by nice and old bridges. near cuenca you have "el cajas" national park. it is a moor that is over the 4000m over the sea level. it is really cold but beautiful. also you have ingapirca ruins. it is an inca palace that is in perfect conditions. that is a brief summay of what you can do in cuenca. i hope it helps you"

Hi, I need to get a bus from Cuenca, Spain to the village of Castejon and I cannot seem to find anything on the net to tell me bus times etc. Its a long shot but does anyone know how I can do this? Many thanks :)

Pompal :
"There is no public transport in Cuenca, apart from taxis & the train which provides a link to other cities. The tourist information office for Cuenca may be able to help, telephone number 0034 969 17 88 00 or fax 0034 969 17 88 43. Taxi fares, generally, offer good value for money in Spain and this may well be the method of travel you have to employ. Good luck."

Apparently, there's some dance trend in Brazil called Funk da Cueca, and there's a whole bunch of videos on YouTube dedicated to it. But our favorite has to be the one above, which features a bunch of teenage boys dancing in their boxers, generously swinging their balls around.
