Crete - Greece

// History Minoan EraCrete was the centre of Europe's most ancient civilization; the Minoan, often referred to as the 'cradle' of European civilization. Little is known about the rise of ancient Cretan society, as very limited written records remain, and many are written in the undeciphered script known as Linear A. This contrasts with the superb palaces, houses, roads, paintings and sculptures that do remain. Though early Cretan history is replete with legends such as those of King Minos; Theseus and the Minotaur; and Daedalus and Icarus passed on via Greek historians and poets such as Homer

ladypam60 :
"Ciao, can this help you ?"
haroula :
"ok,being from crete i can tell you some places that i like! if you're going in summer[i think that's the best time,if you can stand the heat] there are plenty of beautiful beaches!agia pelagia[is my favorite]it's close to the town[about 15 mins away by car] you must visit the palace of knossos and the musuem! the town center of iraklion has many nice places to shop! in Ammoudara there is a great nightlife! the south of crete has beautiful beaches and is very quiet! Hersonissos has a fantastic nightlife and nice clean beaches[but many tourists go there and especially ones who like to get drunk,so it's very noisy at night] Agios Nicolaos has very beautiful beaches and a bottomless lake[they say that when the Germans occupied crete, they threw their tanks in there!] hope i have helped!:)"

Does anyone have an answer to just how many British expatriates that there are living in Crete? It is currently one of the property hotspots around the Mediterranean. It seems an aweful lot of new arrivals are setting up home in the past 12 months. Many are retiring in Crete for its warmer weather compared to UK, and it seems a lot of youngsters are working in Crete these days as well. There must be a lot of Living in Crete "Wannabes" if job seeking ads in Crete forums are anything to judge by.

Kimon :
"Haha!! This is really funny.... Back in 1987 when I visited first time London I was surprised to see that there was hostility towards the foreign workers. Not by most Brits, but some and very feverish. Well it seems that time does have turnings...."
emiliosailez :
"None. They all become Cretans in a very short time."
yannis2810 :
"There is no official number for the British living in Crete, but an estimation is about 5,000 people. Most of the British expats live in western Crete, especially in the Apokoronas area."
eviot44 :
"about 40% allot of them you can't after awhile.."

We are three ladies in our late 20s. We only have three days in Crete and are arriving into and out of Heraklion. We figured we would head on over to Chania after one night in Heraklion and stay there for 3 days. Unfortunately, we have an early ferry ride to Santorini on the morning of the 4th day out of Heraklion. Does anyone reccommend a better way to get to Santorini from Crete? Is there a ferry ride that leaves directly from Chania? Or do have to take the bus to get back to Heraklion? Is Chania even worth visiting or shall we stay on the other side of Crete to avoid the travel hassel?

JAGA :
"As far as I concern there is no line between Chania and Santorini. To me Heraklio is just another ugly city, typical sample of a city made by villagers, in order to say themselves that we live in a "big" city.Chania is more beautiful, with a wonderful old town and a very picturesque port. If you want to live crazy night and drink to death in a fake " made by Greeks for foreigners" place go to Xersonisos ( in Greek) or Hersonissos near Heraklion. The night life in Chania has better quality.Try the delicious food they have and do not forget: Greece is one of the most beautiful countries but you have to find the good places and things to do. To me, you must go to santorini, is wonderful place to see and live for a while. But have in mind that is always crowded!!!!!! Do not forget to go to KNOSSOS in Crete, in Heraklion. People lived there 4000 years ago. Really worths to see it."
slinkymalinky :
"Hi I think I answered another of your questions. I am not aware of ferrys leaving from anywhere else, but what if you fly to Santorini? Chania has an airport. Worth some investigation? I agree with the poster above who describes Heraklion as "ugly" it was one of the worst places I ever saw in Greece. Stay clear."
Tiara :
"chania is much better than Heraklion. Heraklion is a city, except if you go south to saint Nikolas, it's about 1 1/2 hours from Heraklion, and it's nice. i only know that ferries leave for santorini only from Heraklion, or you can go by plane."
Anna Mtz :
"Unfortunately there is no better way... There are only ferry rides from Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. Agios Nikolaos and Sitia are not the best choices because they are far, so the only solution is from Heraklion. Both Chania and Heraklion ar worth visiting. Heraklion is the center of Crete, it has many shops, museums, sights, clubs, cafes. Its only half an hour away from Chersonissos and Malia where nightlife is really tensed! Apart from the downtown you can visit many traditional villages located near Heraklion. Chania is a nice place too, worth visiting! Anyway traveling without hassel is not fun."
SIMON_A :
"ferries only work from heraklion so even chania is the better place to stay, you should move first to heraklion to away from hassle"
starjumper :
"Herakleon reminds me of a bombed Bagdad. It is a labyrinth of cement and confusion. Whatever you do, don't stay there, especially if there are reports of a heat wave. You will suffer. You other options are, beautiful Chania or the eastern side, Sitia (if you can take the twisting winding road that takes two hours by bus). However Sitia is unusual, for it rarely gets a lot of tourists, and if you are interested in the Greek people and way of life, it is a great chance to do so, without mobs of tourists and tourist traps. The beaches there are spectacular. There is a place called Itanos, which was an ancient minoan city, and you can swim above the ruins of that city that fell into the sea during the volcanic eruption of Santorini. No ferries to Santorini though from there."

A British man who leapt 50ft (15m) from a hotel balcony with his two children in Crete has been cleared of murder. John Hogan, 33, from Bradley Stoke, near Bristol, was "incapable" of murdering his son because of his mental state, a Greek court has ruled.

Going up the hill at an altitude of 1080 metres we reach the plateau of Omalos, which has the shape of an irregular circle and is surrounded by steep, awe-inspiring mountains. The plateau, due to its natural fortification, has always been a refuge during all the important revolutions of Crete.
