Cozumel - Mexico

// HistoryThe Maya are believed to have first settled Cozumel by the early part of the 1st millennium AD, and older Preclassic Olmec artifacts have been found on the island as well. The island was sacred to Ix Chel, the Maya Moon Goddess, and the temples here were a place of pilgrimage, especially by women desiring fertility. There are a number of ruins on the island, most from the Post-Classic period. The largest Maya ruins on the island were bulldozed to make way for an airplane runway during World War II. "Hi my friend, Cozumel is not very big, the main thing there is scuba diving, and please remember this because in Cozumel yo can find the second biggest and nicest reef in the world, you will find tons of short trips. Its a must!"

"Well Cozumel isn't very big....you might want to take a look at the down town area there and check out the shops....It won't take you very long to see the whole down town place...then if you do have time after the shopping, you might want to get a taxi to take you around the Island so you can get a good view of it, I did that before....it is a nice view. What I like about Cozumel is the snorkeling but if you are not a water person well the second best thing to do is visit the shops and take a ride around the island so you can see it with your own eyes, it is beautiful. Have fun."

It's three college roommates (now in our 40s). One has been to Playa many times and is lobbying to return. I'm inclined to rent a jeep and see both sides of Cozumel (and do some snorkeling and swimming). If I could get to Xel-Ha and Playa in the time we had, I'd be more inclined to go. Any thoughts? Thanks.

"it really depends what you want, in playa car the 5 av is full with restaurants, bars all not very fancy and nice, cozumel is good for snorkeling but you have to take a boat and it will consume time,, xel ha is kind of far so i will leave it for some other trip. Beaches in both cozumel and playa del carmen are smoooth"

Hi all, My family and I are planning a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico in late May and we are fisrt time cruisers. We aren't sure what to look forward to in Cozumel like where to go? How to go? Should we go to the ruins and where or what are the names of the places we should go to see the ruins? Should we take a taxi or go with a group? What fun in Cozumel that will fit into the cruise's schedule (7 hours). Thank you for your time and effort. Best of lucks to you all.

"We just recently took a cruise and went to Cozumel as well as two other stops. We took a taxi to one of the beaches with a resort and just chilled on the beach. It was very relaxing. Cozumel was the last of the three ports and we were very tired. this really hit the spot."
laurie :
"ohhhhhhh..you will love cozumel!!! we just got back from our cruise there and had a great time. we rented a jeep( the rentals are right on the pier when you exit the ship) and went to the beach...it was beautiful!! there are lots of choices for you. if i were you i would study up on the things to do using the internet and decide what fits your budget and desires best. when we go back next year we are going to take the ferry across to playa del carmen. there are ruins there to explore that everyone said were wonderful. if you like to shop there is plenty of that also. the venders are a bit annoying though. have a great time. by the way, we didn't do any of the outings that the cruise line offered. we wanted get away and relax. and we did and saved some money in the process."

"Go to cozumelmycozumel.com and there are links and suggestions of things to do if you come in on a cruise ship and only have "X" amount of time. Click on Coz for cruisers along the top bar...oh well here it is: "

Tom Fryer has owned Hotel Flamingo for about 11 years. He stayed here while diving, got to know the owner and decided to buy. He bought the hotel with plans to stay stateside and run it long distance. Plans changed and Tom became a resident. Having the owner onsite makes life easier for the guests

A trip to Mexico does not have to be a spring break fling. Enjoy a calmer, more adventurous side of Mexico in Cozumel, where beautiful beaches, a national forest, and unique shops abound.
