Jews in CasablancaThere was a Sephardic Jewish community in Anfa up to its destruction by the Portuguese in 1468. Jews were slow to return to the town, but by 1750 the Rabbi Elijah Synagogue was built as the first Jewish temple in Casablanca. It was destroyed along with much of the town in the earthquake of 1755.By the beginning of the 20th century, Casablanca was home to about 6,000 Jews - more than a quarter of the population. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Casablanca has been associated with Judaism more than any other city in North Africa. The Jewish population snowballed in th

To the moon :

I love old movies, especially from the 40s and 50s, but somehow just can't seem to connect with Casablanca. I understand it's considered one of the greatest movies of all time, I just don't know why it didn't seem as good to me. Anyone else like this?

"I also have the same feelings about Citizen Kane. It's pronounced the "best movie ever" or something, but after watching it, it seemed like just another movie."
"I think the problem people have with watching Casablanca and other films of that day is in realizing that most of the techniques and editing tricks we take for granted these days had to be invented for those movies. The acting in Casablanca is excellent, the editing superb, and the story is well thought out. I think you can do a lot worse. Is it the greatest film of all time? No. But, it is not overrated."
Blessed Rain :
"I love Casablanca but one of the reasons this generation has a hard time with it is because you have already heard half of the quotes in a ton of other things, this is where they all started where they all came from. One movie about 10 famous quotes that have been so over used that when you see it, in its real setting the power has been stolen, watch it again trying to see it and hear it for the first time it may help."

what is the first word you think of when you hear Casablanca?

"playboy mansion because they always have a big Casablanca party around hef's b-day"

"The garbage dump we passed on the way to the airport to leave the country---all that garbage flying around---all that smell--yeah, the government really needs to do something about that. Why would people want to return after they have that as their last memory of the country? Thankfully it wasn't my FIRST memory as I took the train out of the airport."
true_friend :
"i think of moroccans and their atitude."
wishonstarz90 :

What exactly is it? I know it's a movie, and I know Hugh Hefner has that big party every year, but what exactly is it about? Would it be a good theme for a prom?

Betsy B :
"I'm confused. What does the movie Casablanca have to do with a party hosted by Hugh Hefner? The movie takes place in 1941/42 in Casablanca. The Nazis have taken over most of Europe. An escaped "Resistance Leader" and his wife show up in Casablanca hoping to get exit visas for a trip to America. Humphrey Bogart plays Rick, a nigh club owner who had romantic ties with the wife of the Resistance Leader. Casablanca is very tropical (it's in Africa) and is in Morocco. At the time is was part of the French empire. Your prom could do "tropical". You should see the movie. You will get a lot of neat ideas. The ladies and gents in the movie at Rick's nightclub were impeccably dressed- very classy. There is a lot you can do with this theme! :)"
tadeuszsr :
"Possibly not a great prom theme as it involves drinking, gambling, the black market, wartime deprivation, Nazis and collaborationist French colonialists. It is rather romantic in a classic Hollywood way and the clothes are very prom friendly, but that's about it. SPOILER WARNING: It's a great movie, an interesting love story (primarily because the lovers don't get together in a traditional way--though, arguably, they hook up and reconcile to some degree) and very entertaining, but ..."
Micheal V :
""Casablanca" takes places mostly in an American bar in the city of Casablanca, Morocco during World War 2. I don't think it would translate to a prom theme because I believe that it is not possible to reproduce Rick's Amercain Bar in such a large room as a gym, ballroom, etc. The other thing is that the people attending would have to dress in period clothes, which is not a good mix with a formal prom."
The grimlocks :
"heelp meee Rick heeelp meeeee!!!!"
"No this movie will not be a good theme for a prom unless your school has nothing but Skin Head as students. You need to see the movie. It's about Nazi, smuggling, war, etc."
