Trying to determine the best places to surf within 100 miles north or south of Biarritz. e.g. where to stay comfortably? is it cheaper to bring a surfboard or rent one there? what is the rental board selection like? are the locals friendly? is it better to rent a car or take trains? I've extensively checked online sources and have a few travel books -- hoping to get a response from someone who has done this. thx!

"I spent a month there camping in Seignosse on the municipal camping. It was pretty cheap! Seignosse is north of Biarritz, the next town north of Hossegor! I would rent a car though as you may want to move from one surf spot to another! I would take a 6 feet, 6.5 feet and a 7.10 one cos Guethary is a bit like Sunset! Be careful if you are a beginner, strong shorebreak, strong current - beach is paradise though and you can surf naked in some parts! Enjoy!"

"I went to Capbreton last year. Go north and stay at "Chez Petit Jean". Its a camping ground with caravans and its always empty. About 100 euro/week in a caravan for 2. -Beautiful setting. Good breaks around and rent a board there, real cheap and decent ones. You'd want to rent a car, I had my own as i live in Switzerland so i don't know the cost. But you need to be mobile by your own means. People are quite friendly i guess. Not very interested in tourists, they get a lot of em and mainly germans so they're not that crazy about them. But they leave you alone. And there aren't so many surfers (around Capbreton). They're no good as its mainly tourists. And the waves are good, but aim for march-april or sept-oct."

"wannasurf is a really good website to check out before any surf trip, especially international ones. Here's some info I got about france. The link is below for more detailed stuff. Biarritz is in Basque Country. Here's what one person said on the website... "I spent 3 really good days here, waves were great and it wasn't too crowded. Locals here are really friendly!!!! Great for relaxed, soul surfing." I think in most of Europe you don't really need a car. The train can get you around almost anywhere you go. I think it would definitely be more cost effective to just rent a board when you get there. I've heard Biarritz has a lot of local surf shops and places to rent boards. Paying to fly with a board overseas is expensive. And then you have to worry about traveling around the country with a surfboard. Whether you're getting a car, riding the train, or hitch hiking, you're much better off without a surfboard while traveling. Sounds like a great trip! Have Fun!!!"

"If you expect a cheap place, try to go to Lacanau ocean, it's near Bordeaux, wild, and cheap. In Biarritz, Mimizan and Cap breton, waves are also cool, but it's more expensive to rent... For example to rent a 8’2, it's 70 euros ( around 93 US $)... Locals are not so friendly, cuz too many people in the summer time. Better to go in septembre or octobre. Few people, friendly and water around 20.... To check waves, and different stuff try this cool website... It's french... Hope you'll spend good holidays in France..."

Hey everyone, My friends and I are going to Biarritz in just over 3 weeks.I'm bisexual and wonder what the Gay/Bi/Straight scene is like there. What are the prices like for food, drink etc etc? What are the people like? Would it be worth our while to travel to Spain to get alcohol or should we try it in France because I hear the legal age is 18 (Even though the net says 16). Thanks people! :-D

Diarmid :
"The legal age for alcohol is virtually inapplicable in France, particularly in the South West. In France it is 16 but you'll have trouble getting into some nightclubs in the city center. Biarritz rocks but it's a very macho city based around a rugby team. I've been out there on many occasions and I'm not sure how nice a welcome you'd be given if you started trying to hit on guys out there. Rural France isn't the same as Paris and homosexuality isn't as well tolerated in the South West as it is in the North. It would be worth travelling to Spain because the road to Saint Sebastien is awesome... travelling to Spain "to get alcohol" kind of suggests that you couldn't care less where you're going. This is one of the most beautiful regions Europe has to offer and all you seem bent (literally) on is getting pissed. Biarritz isn't cheap - you can expect to pay Paris prices for everything and accomodation is expensive. It's a great city and the weather is likely to be pretty good in three weeks but it's not going to be hot. It's the off season though so as far as partying is concerned you're likely to come across a few resident surfers but most of the big parties only happen in the summer. Copa will be open at the weekend but it's shite. The best bar in town is Philippe Bernat-Salle's Red where they do an excellent fry up at weekends."

Depuis les années 60 et l'importation du surf par le réalisateur américain Viertel, le surf est devenu partie intégrante de la vie de Biarritz, de ses traditions et de son économie (boutiques, fabrication de matériel, écoles, magazines spécialisés, tourisme)
