Beijing - China

PollutionAir pollution levels on an average day in Beijing are nearly five times above World Health Organization standards for safety. China's extremely inefficient use of coal - the country's main source of energy - results in much of the pollution. Despite promises to stage a green 2008 Summer Olympics Bejing has had persistent air pollution - thus city officials are planning to reduce its motor traffic by half during the Games to improve air quality.Dust from erosion of deserts in northern and northwestern China result in seasonal dust storms that plague the city; the Beijing Weather Modi

sball124 :

my parents and i are going to beijing in '08 for the summer olympics. my bf is coming along, how much do u think we should plan on spending? anyone ever go to the olympics anytime? our thing is softball/baseball. any advice as far as hotels andstuff like that? and sites to see? eat?

ShadowCat :
"Sorry, I don't wanna go to Beijing next olympics"
Bridget :
"Try finding 2 seperate rooms in a middle class hotel.one room for your parents and one for you and your guy! Also book the hotel early like 6 months early to assure it wont be given away which is what happens alot of the time!"
weizi :
"u don't need to plan that in 06,u can plan it in the late 07:-0 if u have enough money,u can live in the hotels, some hotels in beijing are really good, five stars, around 900RMB one night beijing, nowadays is really crowed, and full of foreigners, they love the old clutrues welcome!"
leon :
"first, welcome to China. But I can't confirm how much that you will spend. maybe you can lived in TianJin. Because Tianjin is also a big city and it near Beijing. Every goods is more cheaper than BeiJing."
OnTheTreadmill :
"Bring your credit cards and some traveler's checks. You may need to spend a lot during the Olympics, especially on tickets and accommodation. Hotel rooms are expected to be very expensive. Just to give you an indication of the cost of accommodation: 5-star hotels are selling standard rooms from USD100-300 per night today. Lower rated hotels are selling at from USD30-100. Don;t worry about food. There are all kinds of international cuisines available in this city. Historical sites are plentiful in Beijing. Make sure you have at least 7 days for sight seeing. Just to name a few: 1. Forbidden City - spend 1 day there. 2. Tian-an-men square (outside of Forbidden City) + Temple of Heaven - spend 1 day 3. Summer Palace - 1 day 4. Ming Tomb + Great wall - 1 day 5. Beijing Muzeum - 1 day (very big. You may not be able to finish it) etc Try not to travel with the local tour as you may not be able to see as much as you wish. Plan your routes and time carefully. Good luck!"
ai_leen_2003hk :
"It is good that you think of planning your trip long before you get on the plane! Check the schedules (for baseball, it starts from 13th to 22nd August, 22nd would be the final match) of the games and maps of the stadiums then book the hotel near by to save the traffic time. Beijing would be very crowded during Olympics because not just tourists from outside world but also people from different parts of China would rush to Beijing. We can predict that the hotel room rates would be very expensive that even a 3 stars hotel would take the chance to rip u off! The official website of Beijing 2008 Olympics is en.beijing2008.com Actually, there are some olympics events would be held in Shanghai and Equestrian events would be held in Hong Kong. Travelling Cost estimation per person per day (for 2006 summer) round air-ticket US$600+ (Y class departure from San Francisco) hotel US$ 70+ (US$140 for a double room per night) Food & Drinks US$ 30+ (per day) Transportation US$ 10+ (per day) x 4 would be enough for Taxi fee around the city area Other expenses US$50 (per day) I would suggest you to sum up the above figures by how many days you would stay in Beijing then add 25% of the total on top as your budget (at least a rough idea of how much you would spend) then check the travel agencies which provide tour services for olymipics 2008. Wish you good luck!"
realfind2001 :
"Plan ahead. I went to LA and Athens olympics. Get you place early. I found a good site at. I had a great tour guide in Beijing (Nancy) and a great travel company to arrange most of my travel (karen). you can contact them if you have any questions. It is great but I think they are talking about ending baseball as an event soon."
tianjingabi :
"I would start booking soon. There is definitely going to be some price gouging, so I would plan to spend what you would plan to spend in an expensive city like New York or even London. I don't know where the baseball is going to be held. I live in Tianjin, and the soccer will be held here, as well as some other events, rowing, I think. If you can find out where baseball is going to be held, you can try to book fairly close to that. Tianjin would be cheaper, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a tourist destination. You'll definitely want to see the Great Wall while you're here. It's a can't miss. It alone is worth the trip. Also, the Summer Palace is incredible. There's also the Forbidden City. I wouldn't go more than once if I had a choice. You might want to see Tian An Men Square just to say you have. It's a big, big, big, empty square. I'd mention some shopping stops, but who knows what will have happened between now and then. So much changes so fast in China. Those are all sites in or around Beijing. If you plan to go further afield, there's lots to see, but the choice is so broad I don't know where to begin."

buddy :

. Does anyone know if there is an online engine that would give the official spelling for: "Beijing" and "Zhongguo" according to the beijing dialect, (this is distinct from the "Standard Mandarin")? In other words, is "Beijing" and "China", spelled in pinying the same way in Standard Mandarin as it is in Beijing dialect? [[ The question is not frivolous. For example, in the Beijing dialect "Wo" is written "Wor", as is appropriate considering the added "r" sound added by beijing speakers, and Thus the official spellling in pinyin for Beijing dialect comes to be "Wor". Thank you very much for your help.

Aidant :
"Within the Beijing Dialect, they add 'r' to words (mostly that end with an 'n' in Pinyin) The official spelling of 'wo' is NEVER written 'wor', it is just pronounced this way, we onyl write Pinyin with 'r' when the Hanzi can add the 'r' Hanzi too. For example: 饭店 - fàndiàn , 饭店 儿 - fàndiànr. You will never see: 我 儿, it is only pronounced this way, never written. Hope that helps! Good luck, they add it on EVERYTHING!!!"
1iz@rd0ne@rth :
"It is the way you have written it...Bei jing and Zhong Guo there is no extra r sound you only add the beijing r when you say Na r (they say Na li in the south) yi hui r (a little while) or yi dian r (a little bit) thats all I know. Pinyin never says Wo r or anything like that check this link for more info"
China Guru :
"The standard language of China is called "putonghua" (standard speach). This language is Mandarin to us. The language of Beijing, beijinghua, which is a regional Chinese dialect is not spelled in any way what so ever. The only two languages of China that have romanized spelling are Putonghua and Guangdonghua (Cantonese) from Hongkong, not including the phonetic systems of Taiwan. Putonghua is based on the language of North China, where it is spoken with slight variations from location to location, sometimes only within a 10 mile radiace you will find dialectiacal variances. Take for instance the difference between beijinghua and tianjinhua from Tianjin only 100 km from Beijing. They are very different, but both are Northern Chinese dialects. (Consider differences between the way people in NY, Chicago, and Boston all speak the same language. This is a pronunciation difference rather than a dialect difference but it is a good example.) In standard Mandarin, putonghua, Beijing is spelled just like you see it; bei jing (north capitol - two characters), China is spelled; zhong guo (center country - two characters). This is using the pinyin system of sounding out Mandarin for children to learn the pronunciation of each character since characters are pictographs and not words. The Beijing dialect is just that, a dialect of North China. It is not spelled out and the basic difference, outside regional terminologies, between Putonghua and Beijinghua is the usage of the floating "R". This is actually a charatarisitc of North Chinese dialects, most Northerners will use the floating "R" to some extent, however the Beijing dialect goes further than most with its use of the floating "R". Now, this floating "R" is not to be tackled by beginners as it is something that has accepted rules and ways of usage. You can't just add it where ever you want. Take the word for child "hai zi" this is proper Mandarin, in the Northern dialects many people will change the "zi" to an "R" calling a child a "xiao ha'r", or play "wan" will be morphed to "wa'r" but these all have rules of usage that are not written out. Take the word "men" (door) for an example. This word means door, gate, an opening to walk through. When the "R" is added to it it would refer to a smaller door like the one of your home, or a cabinet door, something more personal. However when referring to a larger door or gate the "R" would never be added. Tian an men would never add an "R" to men as it would sound very awkward and almost cause people to laugh. The Golden Gate Bridge "jin men qiao" is just that, you can't change the men to me'r it doesn't make sense within the logic of the language. Granted the people who speak beijinghua use more floating "R"s than others but the bigger difference is in the regional, expressions and words they use in their everyday speech."

I currently live in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and this is my first experience in Asia. Honestly, I don't like this place! and I decided to move. last month I visited Beijing for about 6 days and honestly I loved it! There's a job there and I applied, but before I make the big decision...can I ask... Is Beijing still nice after you live in it and find all the flaws and things that dont work? do you ever wish you want to escape from there? I'm gonna be working for Grand Hyatt Beijing and I went there when I was on vacation! honsetly...Oriental Plaza is fantastic!!! the monuments are great!! fantastic night life in Beijing...is it still like that after you actually live in it?

Yoshi Marc Levi :
"Seriously, why the heck do you wanna live in china? Its horrible there. Stay in America or England. But if you really wanna live in Asia, Japan and Korea would have to be your best bet. But theres a language barrier if you can't speak Japanese or Korean. So the next best places would have to be Taiwan or Singapore."
MangoJuice :
"You will experience much more in China, Beijing is fantastic for night life, entertaiment, and also there are sort of different people living there. The only thing that the city can't give you is peacefulness. It's crowded and busy. Winter can be hard and specially when there's dust storm. Overall I like Beijing and would recommend anyone to live and experience the surreal life."
kevin :
"well, i want to say welcome to beijing, it's a good choice, yeah u applied a job and u can make money here, i m sure the Oriental Plaza is not the only place that will attract u, the longer u stay here, the more fantastic u will find, good luck man. why not have a try?"
Topgun :
"quite different, maybe better or worse, just move on and you will see.you are luckly to have a job. unless you are expatriate, you will have backup plan."
djkaplin :
"Ok for one i have been to Beijing three times... and the first time i loved it! the second time was just alright, and the third was bad, when you really get to know Beijing and stay there along time you will hate the traffic problems, and it is SO much expensive than the rest of China. Tip: if you want a job in China, contact me: Ryan"
faisal :
"i am living in beijing for three years and i love it."
Moe A :
"Some problems in Beijing are the traffic, the crowds, and the heat"
Linda W :
"I just returned from Beijing after spending time there to adopt a chinese baby girl. There is a lot of air pollution there! I got sick with a bad throat, ear and eye infection. I would suggest wearing a mask when you are outdoors! They traffic is very busy but it is a good city. We were in Chongqing the first week and I liked it better. But I am serious about that mask. Linda in Canada"
thinker :
"Yes, Yes, Yes!!!"
winkoftherabbit :
"may i ask what position you applied for and how much is your salary? I know its a personal question but i want to major in that field when i go to college so any information is a real big help."
