My ggf immigrated from Bavaria to America. He was born in 1824 and was in the 1860 census in Blair County, PA. How do I find any family connection in Bavaria? His name was George Kirstner and he arrived with his wife Barbara.

GenevievesMom :
"I can give you a short cut. There is a little town in Michigan called Frankenmuth. It's built on its Bavarian heritage and their local library is full of experts on everything Bavarian. They have access to records that most libraries don't carry...because Bavarian genealogy is very specialized. Here's more on the town: Here's the library's site: If nothing else, contact them to see if they can have a volunteer work with you to find the records you need."
grannytoad :
"You may find records on their arrival in the US at that would give a city, but that's almost a bit early. It would still seem to me that Philly would be an immigrant port but I don't know yet of an immigrant intake center there for that time. However - there should be immigration records. It's also possible that one or more of their children lived to die in the period when deaths were certified and certificates may give the city of parents' births. You may need to watch for either/or baptismal or given name. I'm pretty sure that when you learn where, that the records you'll want to research will be church records."

Can anyone tell me what the driving distance would be between Bavaria, Germany and Venice, Italy?? Thanks!

Julie L :
"404 miles..take a train"
The baby penguin :
"depends from where in Bavaria you start, it's a state of Germany, not a town. Example: from Hof (north Bavaria) to Venice it's about 830 km (520 miles) from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (south Bavaria) it's around 440 km (275 miles)"
ZoneRider :
"The distance between Munich, Germany (Bavaria) and Venice, Italy is 313 miles or 504 kilometers. Since your question did not contain a specific city or town, I chose Munich, having lived there. It is the largest southern most city with a centralized railroad (HauptBahnHof), international airport (Flughoffen) and the national highway (Autobahn). If you are traveling by train, Munich HBF to Venice Postojna, the travel time is 7 hours 32 minutes. Flight time is 1 hour 15 minutes. I hope this helps, Tchuss."
chuck :
"If you take a car from Munich to Venice and you dont go on a Friday night or Saturday morning then you can make it under 5 hrs. Thats driving faster than allowed but its not a problem. Not too many spped limits on the German highway, Austria is very strickt but so small that it doesnt really count. Italy has speed limits but being that the highway patrol is ALWAYS in some coffee shop enjoying their espresso, there's very little chance of being stopped. I've been speeding down to Italy doing 180 to 240km/hr at least once a month for the past 18 years and didnt get a ticket yet. It will take MUCH longer by train and you wouldnt have the lluxoury to stop at all the beautiful places you will pass."
