Discussion on Antwerp

Steve T :

I'm studying in Maastricht, Netherlands and wanted to take a day trip to either Antwerp, Belgium or Cologne, Germany. I'll probably be in the city 11am - 7pm. I wanted to know which would be better for a day trip? And what should I do in that city? I would like to go in 2 days, so fast answers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lui :
"heyyy I was also studying in Maastricht and visited both places, both cities are great and beautiful, but if this is going to be a one day trip try Cologne, since Antwerp is far away from maastricht.. what to see, the cathedral, walk around the river..."
glljansen :
"I have lived, worked and loved in Antwerp.. I could tell you a thousand reasons to make you believe that it is the best destination.. but if you have only to spend that couple of hours, go for Cologne.. you will enjoy it briefly, like a brief snuff of the worldfamous , well smelling 'Eau De Cologne 4711'... young and already soo hastened... Enjoy, wherever you go"
pro_and_contra :
"Definitely Antwerp.....I have been to Cologne, the Cathedral is worth seeing, otherwise it's just a big city."
Demon Doll :
"Antwerp. DIAMONDS, baby!"
Jerycho :
"Tough call. Both cities are equally less than super amazing destinations. Cologne is closer and more direct to get to, Antwerp is marginally more interesting but full of Belgians. Cologne has sausages, Antwerp has better beer and waffles. I vote Cologne."
jimi :
"Koln in the single most amazing city you will ever see."
Rik :
"I've lived been some time in Köln (Cologne) and know Antwerp also rather well. If you like Roman history, I should say Köln. If you like shipbuilding museum, diamonds, old painting (Rubens, ...), museum of Plantin (old house with one of the oldest printing museums of the world in it, ... I should say Antwerp. Antwerp has more old buildings, musea, cathedral, beautiful churches. Koln has also the old market but in general Antwerp has more authenticity (because Köln has been flattened by the allied bombers in WWII. Besides the beer and food is much better in Antwerp. Give it a try, you wont regret it."
Logon :

Are there any tobacco shops in Antwerp selling at same prices as in Adinkerke ? ( i.e 50g Drum @ euro 4.20)

Michael M :
"so many cannot list here"
mal g :
"As above. Same price everywhere in Belgium"
Gilbert V :
"To much to give you a list! ( Antwerp is bigger than Brussels) so you will find anything you dream about! Have a nice trip!"
pb k :

What is the cheapest way to travel from London to Antwerp? I'm looking to travel the 30th or 31st of march.

ernie.e :
"Easyjet."
MARTYN H :
"push bike via dover dunkirk"
Beni :
"The London to Antwerp route presents some interesting logistical challenges for flying, ferry, train, etc. because there aren't any direct routes and would involve multiple modes of transportation. I don't think Easy Jet flies to Belgium from the UK. Ryan Air does, but the airport is south of Brussels and would cost an arm and a leg to get you to Antwerp. The cheapest way I know of (and probably the least hassle) would be Eurolines bus. They depart from central London, go to the Dover-Calais ferry and on to Antwerp. The fare will be about 30-35 pounds (about $60 each way) Have a great time!"
Chantalduvelbeer :
"Euro Lines (bus) if you buy in advance it's cheaper. Or Euro star(expensive) best also to reserved as soon as possible to get a cheaper tariff Euro Lines stops in the center of Antwerp(is easy). Euro star stops in Brussels south station, then the EC (= direct)train to Antwerp Central(=35 min.) Remember flights are expensive and that so called London City airport is NOT in the city, was there long ago and a terrible connection to the REAL city of London(at that time there was not a tube connection form there and it was 1,5 hr bus drive!, that changed I heard, there's a tube now. If you take a plain GATWICK is the best(did that also several times) only unfortunately they don't fly anymore to ANTWERP(= in fact DEURNE airport, small airport) so you best take then BRUSSELS ZAVENTEM airport, good connections with the train to Antwerp CENTRAAL this last word is very important when you get of the train , because the station before this one is ANTWERPEN BERCHEM and from there it would cost you to much in taxi trip. Also take warm coat and umbrella with you can be bad weather here."
misspimousse :
"most comfortable would be by train, eurostar, then a local train. it's not always cheap though, but the earlier you get your tickets the better."
belgium :
"Check this Flights from Antwerp to London City. Realy easy. It's a local airport and they fly with small airplanes. Just get by taxi to the airport of antwerp, it's difficult to find, or leave on time by bus from Antwerp center. Have fun"

You’re looking at photographs from a new attempt to break the world record for the "The Largest Champagne Fountain" in Antwerp, Belgium: The 7 metre (22.9 feet) high pyramid will contain more than 43,000 glasses and weigh 8,750 kg (19,290 pounds) to set a new record.

A guide to Antwerp that eschews the main tourist spots and shows some interesting, offbeat type of places that could really give you a feel for Belgium.
