Why is real estate in Anchorage Alaska so expensive?? In surrounding cities, of anchorage, i can buy a single family home for just 150,000, but in Anchorage, that'll only get me a decent apartment to a crappy townhome. There is the obvious answer like " Anchorage is the biggest city and all those other cities are small in population", but i just would like to consider other options. Thanks!

Brandon Y :
"Property in Alaska is booming all over. When you say surrounding cities, do you mean Wasilla and Palmer? Cause yes it is cheaper to buy there, and will have more equity in a few years, but you have a 45+ minute drive to Anchorage. Eagle River is the same as Anchorage when it comes to prices, and Girdwood is even worse. Alaska is one of the top places to see, and with Anchorage being the main city people land in to come to Alaska, it is in high demand for property. There is nothing you can really do in terms of getting a cheaper home in Anchorage, unless you want to live in a bad neighborhood."
Calogne :
"Anchorage has built to it's borders. There really isn't much land that is available to build on. That is why it is so expensive. Also, until recently, everyone had to go to Anchorage or Fairbanks to work and shop. It's been the hub of activity for all the surrounding cities for years. All that's changing now. But the prices for housing and land aren't, it is still in high demand."

I know that Cottonwood Creek mall is getting a Target sometime in the next year, but I was wondering if Anchorage is going to get a Target as well. If so, where in Anchorage is it going to be? P.S.: Do you know of any other stores coming to Anchorage in the next 2 years?

Kristi S :
"Why do you need a Target when you have a Fred Meyer! Hahaha gotta love freddies...unless you work there like me. Then you HATE them!"

I am trying to decide where to live after I get my degree and career going and to start a family. I have done some research and I am torn between Boston or Anchorage. I found out that the cost of living in Anchorage lower and I'd like to know if anyone in these cities can attest to how good it is living in these cities, particulary Anchorage, AK. Thanks I am a female to be married when the move occurs. Money is a big issue. I'd like to work but not have to spend all of it on utilities and such that are needed when owning a home. Also, I am looking in the long run for kids and being able to have a good life growing up.

"Are you male or female? There are many more men in Alaska than there are women. So finding a mate if your male means plenty of competition. Boston and Anchorage are very different cities. Consider Boston more hustle and bustle while Anchorage is more scenic and calm. Boston has a higher cost of living and you get paid to live in Alaska - if that means anything to you. Good luck"

"I have visited both cities and I would definitely pick Boston."

"I've been in both Boston and Anchorage... Boston is exciting and fun with a great nightlife... But is very expensive and highly taxed... Anchorage is very very laid back (going out to an opera is still casual dress)... Not too crowded even though they have half the population of Alaska... And great taxes... No State Income Tax, No Sales Tax, and they still have a surplus so they give residents a tax refund anyway...."
