Amsterdam - Netherlands

Amsterdam  (IPA: ) is the capital of the Netherlands. Its name is derived from "Amstel dam", pointing to the city's origin: a dam on the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, its red-light district (de Wallen), its liberal coffeeshops, and its many canals which have led to Amsterdam being called the "Venice of the North". During the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam was one of the most important ports in the world, with innovative developments in trade, and became the leading centre for finance and diamonds. The city, founded in the late 12th century as a small

space :

i wanna go to amsterdam, what are awesome historical things about amsterdam that i can tell my parents so i have a reason to go there other than legalized weed [since i cant say i wanna go there just 4 that] lol

hopper13 :
"Anne Franks house is moving, the itself is very old and beautfiul the Van Gogh museum, flower markets and the Heinekan museum. In realisty ur parents wil prob know why u want to go"
Alwin E :
"Well, the sex museum, maybe? (Yes, they have one.)"
asheligh4 :
"The culture itself is really great - the canals, bridges, bikes, old buildings and narrow streets. The museums are a must-see, especially the VanGogh museum and Rijksmuseum. The Anne Frank House is really moving. Go sit in the big wooden shoe at the wooden shoe factory. Check out the flower museum and eat some poffertjes and gouda cheese :) View the city from the tower of the Westerkerk. Take a canal cruise or rent a canal bike (pedal boat) and pedal your way around the canals. Rent a bike or put on some good walking shoes and explore the city. If you want specifically historical things, there are a lot of old churches (kerks), and buildings, including the Royal Palace. Amsterdam has museums for everything, including cats and handbags! Plus, there are all the "regular" things like lots of places to shop, open-air markets, a zoo, etc. Hint - tell your parents that Amsterdam will give you an appreciation for history and wartime Europe, an exposure to a new geography and environment (polders, etc), and an opportunity to learn about a new language, people, and culture. Good luck!"
Who? :

Tell me everything in YOUR OWN WORDS what you know about Amsterdam? -How can you become a legal citizen? -I dont think its its own country, so what country is it in? -And what all is "legal" in Amsterdam? OR someone could just tell me

dave_martin_7777 :
"Bummer, if you had a computer and an internet connection you could find all that out for yourself. Oh well. "...YOUR OWN WORDS..."... you sure are a bossy little prick, aren't you? Do mommy and daddy serve you hand and foot? Eric want some more Cheesey Poofs?"
Jerry Garcia :
"I've been to Amsterdam twice. It is a city in the country The Netherlands, sometimes called Holland. The people of Holland are refered to as Dutch. Read what Ivan writes and keep in mind that Amsterdam is one of the few cities that truly has something for everyone."
Ivan :
"I know more about Amsterdam than I can write here, so I won't write everything... - You can become a legal citizen by living in the country for a while. To do that you must have a residence permit, which you can get either by marrying a Dutch or by working in Netherlands - The Netherlands. You are absolutely right that Amsterdam is not a country - Smoking pot and prostitution. I figured those were the answers that you were looking for."
M :
"Its all what you people in States don't have and can't do. :-))"
silv2078 :
"yea someone coud just tell you like Ivan did but Ivan isn't the end all be all is he? How do you know he's right?? How hard is it to google your answers?? Quit being lazy and pick up a book and read. I'm in awe of people that don't know the Amsterdam is a CITY in the Netherlands. Ever heard of an Atlas??"
theinfamous_eric :

If anybody has been to Amsterdam fairly recently, can they tell me some of the pot cafe's they went to, and say which ones were the best and why. Same goes for the shroom cafe's (unless they don't exist and i was lied to). I'm taking my summer trip to Amsterdam, and I want to be prepared.

mychel :
"buy an issue of hightimes magazine,or email me and I will get back to you when I find the one I have which happens to review and suggest itineraries for those planning to go there for public stoning:)"
NVgirl :
"You have to check out the 18th annual Cannabis Cup. I have friends who've been to it and loved it. It's Nov. 19-23. Here's a link: Have fun!"
